Harry Potter, Rumors!! Book 6

-Harry will be 16 years old.

-NEW "Harry Potter and the Green Flame Torch" is DEFINITELY NOT the title of Book 6, unlike previously thought. It has come to my attention that on February 26, 2000, Warner Bros. patented the following names in the UK patent office: Harry Potter and the Alchemist's Cell, Harry Potter and the Pyramids of Furmat, and Harry Potter and the Chariots of Light. What this means, I am not entirely sure of.

-NEW There are rumors that it will not be called "Harry potter and the Green Flame Torch", as previously believed.

-NEW There has been a continuing rumor that the sixth Harry Potter book it to be called "Harry Potter and the Green Flame Torch". Also, JKR has said that Harry's Green eyes will play an extremely important role in the books. So here is our theory: We think Harry either is the Green Flame torch (hence GREEN flame, important GREEN eyes) or he will be the only one who can control this torch (hence his mother's important GREEN eyes, Harrys important GREEN eyes). This could be why Voldemort wanted to kill Harry in the first place, and this could have been Professor Trelawney's first predictionthats how Voldemort found out, mayebe. -from Lori and Kim -Some sources say title might be "Harry Potter and the Green Flame Torch". Supposedly, Harry finds a torch which has a green flame and is used to heal good and kill evil. The term "green flame" came from a magic spell from ancient Egypt. The "green flame" comes from Memphis, Egypt and it means, "I have not stolen food". The "magic spell" came from the Book of the Dead. Other sources say the book will no be titled that.

-It is rumored that either Lupin's or Quirrel's brother will be a Defense of Against the Dark Arts teacher.

-One of Ron's brother's might die.

Harry Potter, Rumors!! Book 5

-Harry will be 15 years old.

-The book will not be as long as Book 4.

-NEW At the end of the Fifth Book, Mrs. Weasley tells Harry that she asked Dumbledore if Harry could come to their house directly after school that summer, but Dumbledore insisted that he go to the Dursley's first. As Dumbledore said, their is a very powerful magic protecting Harry at the Dursley's. This should not come as a surprise, as proven by the fact that in 11 years, not one Death Eater ahs attacked the Dursley's. A lot of people have noticed that Dumbledore metions an Arabella Figg near the end of the book, could this be the same Mrs. Figg that lives next door? J.K. Rowling revealed that it is. Nevertheless, that does not guarantee that that is the powerful magic protecting Harry.

-NEW There is a rumor that we will see an heir to Voldemort in a future book, what if Harry is that heir? There is some evidence, but also speculation, to suggest this: 1) Hagrid said in the first book that all wizards that went bad were from Slytherin. Hagrid didn't know that Sirius was good, which means he thought he was bad. So Sirius had to be in Slytherin. 2) Voldemort, when he was 16, looked exactly like Harry. When Harry looked into the mirror of Erised, he saw a bunch of people, his family, that looked like him (the untidy black hair that Harry, James and Voldemort all have). 3) Voldemort is the perfect age to be Harry's grandfather. It is said that Harry's grandparents will be in future books. In book 2, it says that the chamber of secrets was opened 50 years ago, when Tom Riddle was 16, making Voldemort 66. 4) Profesor Trelawney's first prediction will be important. Perhaps she predicted the downfall of Voldemort, by his own heir. Voldemort only wanted to kill James and Harry, he only killed Lily to get to Harry. If he knew that Harry and James were his heirs he would only want to kill them if he had heard of Trelawney's prediction.

-JK Rowling gave a recent interview to the BBC which will air Friday. In it, she shows fans the final chapter of Book 7. Although she will not reveal what's inside, she does say: "This is really where I'll wrap everything, it's the epilogue and I basically say what happens to everyone after they leave school, those who survive because there are deaths, more deaths coming." She also says: "I really don't think you need much insight to guess that death and murder are always a possibility in the world. And more people are going to die. And there's at least one death that's going to be horrible to write." And finally,the big question: will she write more than 7 books? "I'm not going to say I'll never write anything to do with the world of Hogwarts ever again...It could be the encyclopaedia of the world (of Hogwarts) and then I could rid myself of every last lurking detail, but, no, not a novel."

-NEW! I realized that Mundungus Fletcher, who was mentioned at the end of "The Goblet of Fire" is also mentioned in "The Chamber of Secrets" as trying two put a hex on Arthur Weasley. -NEW! SPOILER Harry Potter enters his 5th year at Hogwarts with more dread than daring. Lord Voldemort has risen again, and although the Dark Lord is not present, Harry feels his presence everyday. His scar hurts, his writing sometimes fails him, and his studies are more troubling than exciting. Hermione, now a prefect, offers to help him in any way she can. Ron, his best friend, joins in. Paranoia reigns. The faculty also undergoes some major upheavals. There are now 2 Defense Against the Dark Arts teachers: Mad-Eye Moody and Professor Lupin. There are also 2 Potions teachers - Professor Snape and a Hogwarts alumnus. There is a new teacher named Lysandra Leonessa, an all-Muggle who seems to be tied to Professor Lupin in some way. Harry has a new pet as well: Snuffles, a black dog. Thus, nearly well protected, harry is surrounded by teachers and fellow students. Dumbledore monitors him closely. The new faculty keep their wands near and never fail to check on him. Lupin and Leonessa are his nearest friends, but they both deal with each other uneasily. As though drawn by some dying sense of venture, Harry interviews the normally cheerful Miss Leonessa. Miss Leonessa does not reveal anything, but all that Harry has to do is to check his wizard album. He finds his parents surrounded by the new, once-young, faculty, along with Sirius Black and Lupin - and, oh yes, Pettigrew. He knows that they are keeping a protective shield around him, but can that shield be broken? How was it penetrated? And why does Professor Lupin have his arm around Miss Leonessa? Does it have something to do with his collection of books of fiction written by Miss Leonessa, all of which he keeps from her? "Of course," Hermione declares in her you-idiot-haven't-you-read-"Hogwarts-A-History?" tone, "Professor Lupin and Miss Leonessa were in love!" That of course, might just be the surface, because Harry notices that Dumbledore always calls the two teachers to his office. Hermione researches on Lupin and Leonessa, then finds that they were both Quidditch players: Lupin a beater for Gryffindor, Leonessa a chaser for Ravenclaw. Good research - and suddenly Hermione's last as she begins to fail and flounder in her exams and quizzes. However, Hermione is not alone. All the prefects start failing and floundering. Miss Leonessa holds a review class, but to no avail. Professor Lupin tries to help and comfort her, but she casts him away, this time, cruelly. He, in his own frustration, trains the Gryffindor Quidditch team with more ferocity and less spirit. With some spark left in her, Hermione makes it rain one afternoon when Professor Lupin is zooming around the Quidditch field on his broomstick. In her pity for Lupin, Lysandra Leonessa tends to his fever and is reunited with him. Professor Dumbledore, ever the all-seeing eye, thanks Hermione for her "good idea." Quidditch season arrives, and it is opened by an exciting exhibition game, Boys vs. Girls. On one side are Lupin, along with a selected group, and Harry as the seeker. On the other are McGonagall, Leonessa, selected girls, and the seeker Cho Chang. It is expected to be a game of wits, until Harry catches the Snitch and all brooms fail. Chaos ensues. Only powerful Dark Magic can cause broomsticks to fall. Only powerful Dark Magic can cause the prefects and the top students of the school to fail. Someone as penetrated the protection of Hogwarts and is advancing fast. As soon as the new faculty is ready, and Lupin, Leonessa, and McGonagall are healed, they begin patrolling the grounds. Fortunately, all disasters seem to wane, and, by Christmas, despite all the students being forcefully kept at Hogwarts, everyone is happy. One night, a scream rings through Hogwarts. Several students report that a hooded figure, shaking and clinging to Professor McGonagall, is led to Dumbledore's office. Valentines' has just passed - with about a hundred arguments between Ron and Hermione - and all the festivities are drowned by the ensuing paranoia. Harry is called to the Headmaster's office the next day, where he finds Professor Lupin and Miss Leonessa. Dumbledore orders them to tell Harry what has happened. With both teachers contributing, Harry learns of the Order of the Phoenix, established just before he was born, and created to combat Lord Voldemort's power. Made up of the closest of friends, including the Potters, Lupin, Leonessa, and Dumbledore, the Order of the Phoenix was once strong and unbendable. Lord Voldemort, was a once suave Tom Riddle, had tried to unite his powers with Lysandra, who is actually a powerful wizard skilled in the dark arts but who refuses to use them. Lysandra was able to harness the strength of the Order and defend herself. The Dark Powers, however, penetrated into the weakest of them - Peter Pettigrew. Because of Pettigrew, the order was broken. Even then, Lord Voldemort nearly died after trying to kill Harry. Despite the apparent triumph, Lysandra left the order in shame, thinking that Lupin and Dumbledore would disown her as one of their kind. Upon her return, both to Hogwarts and to the order, she vowed to both protect Harry and destroy Lord Voldemort. For reasons known only to Dumbledore and a Lupin now fiercely protective of his girl, Voldemort's attack on Lysandra had nearly broken her. She and Lupin bid Harry to be careful, as she has dreamed of Lord Voldemort's return. (SPOILER WARNING!!!) In a series of strange events, Harry encounters Draco Malfoy, who, at first despising him, now tries to kill him. He encounters Draco and a band of Slytherins one night in the Gryffindor common room. What follows is what appears to be a Wizard's duel, promptly stopped by the re-formed Order of the Phoenix. The Slytherin students drop unconscious, Neville Longbottom among them, numbering himself among the exploited - and contributing the Gryffindor password. Snape administers the Truth Potion to them all, but the students have been lost since the first day of school. Their minds have been conquered by their parents, but their natural childlikeness, though hidden, prevents complete conquest and even Harry's death. Malfoy even tries to kill himself in a fit of "Wizard anger," but Harry saves him. Their enmity does not end... ..But this book does. The Order of the Phoenix uncovers Voldemort's plan: Weaken all the top Hogwarts students, cause enmity amongst them, then use their disunity to enter through the shield of the Order. Everything goes against him again, but everyone knows that this will not last long. The Order this remains as strong as ever, and its members protect Harry, knowing perhaps that, with all the boy's power, Voldemort would want to get to him and purchase the power at the price of Harry's life. All will end if this should happen, And, with dread mixed with his courage, Harry leaves Hogwarts for another vacation.

-It will reveal why Voldermort killed Lily and James Potter.

-On Newsround, JKR said in an interview with Leezo that in Book 5, we will see some places that have only been mentioned in previous books. It might be the town where Lily and James Potter lived, Godric's Hollow.

-JK Rowling says Book 5 "probably won't be as long as book four. It will be scary. Harry finds out a lot of things he hasn't stumbled across so far."

-During the summer, Harry is invited to the Weasly's house again. When he arrives there, Fluer Delacour is there with Bill. It turns out the Weasleys are giving her a ride to Hogwarts to start teaching potions. This means that Snape finally gets the Defense Against Dark Arts job. But, he is strangely not at all the lessons beacause he is helping Dumbledore spy on Voldemort by pretenting to be a Death Eater. He might have to assasinate Dumbledore. Dumbledore might either fake his own death or he will let himself be killed to set up Snape in a position to kill Voldemort down. Or, he might help Sirus and Harry kill Voldemort in the 7th book.

-Snape will like Harry better.

-The title will be "Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix. This was announced by JKR on "The Today Show" during a visit to the US in Oct. 2000. She has repeated it at several subsequent appearances.

-The book was to be due in November 2001 as JKR announced the book would be released to coincide with the release of the film (November 16, 2001). The publishers have since announced it will be released no sooner than 2002.

-Prof. Lupin and other favorite characters make a return. JKR says we'll see several previous characters.

-Dementors might come back to Hogwarts because Fudge wants to keep an eye on Dumbledore.

-JK Rowling said that we'll learn if Percy sides with his family or Fudge.

-In the fifth book, the Order of the Phoenix, the shadow of Cedric Diggory's living self plays a fairly big part in helping Harry over two specific challenges he faces. Which challenges he faces are not known.

-We learn more about the background of Lily Potter.

'Harry Potter' Star in Family Feud Over Hindu Beau

The father and brother of a British actress who starred in the more recent "Harry Potter" movies have been charged with threatening to kill the 22-year old actress, apparently in disapproval of her boyfriend.

The actress, Afshan Azad, played Harry’s classmate Padma Patil in the popular series. Her father, Abdul Azad, 54, and her brother, Ashraf Azad, are accused of threatening her in May during a fight at her Manchester, England, home. The brother is also accused of assaulting her.

Details of the alleged threats and assault weren't immediately clear, but prosecutors have said the Muslim men did not approve of her relationship with her Hindu boyfriend.

The case has been adjourned until July 12, and both men were granted bail on condition that they do not contact Azad at her home.

The potential role of religion in the case has raised questions about the men's motivaIn traditional [Muslim] societies the family comes before the individual, and the woman represents the honor and purity of the family, so for a woman in the family to engage in a relationship that is taboo can be viewed as a violation of the family,” said Haroon Moghul the Executive Director of the Maydan Institute, a consulting firm that seeks to raise awareness of Muslims.

“Also in more conservative circles of Hindu or Muslim families, people don’t date before they are married, and it can be a lot worse for the girl and she is the one who is blamed and punished by the father, uncle or elder brother.”

Such cases can lead to what some people term “honor killings," though the term often is denounced in religious communities as a misnomer.

“It is poorly named since there is no honor in killing a woman. What these crimes are about is controlling a woman and it is not something unique to just Muslim society,” Hussein Rashid, a visiting instructor at Hofstra University’s Department of Religion, told Fox411.com. “I can’t put words in these men’s mouths, but it sounds like they had real issues with the success of a woman in their household and that this is about a loss of power.”

Warner Brothers, the studio that released the Harry Potter films, did not respond to calls for comment.

Afshan Azad first appeared in the Potter franchise in "Harry Potter and The Goblet of Fire." She will also appear in Harry Potter And The Deathly Hallows, the final film in the saga.

Radcliffe ‘weeping like a baby’ at end of Potter

About 10 years ago, a 9-year-old Daniel Radcliffe auditioned for the part of a boy wizard in a popular series of kids’ books. This week, Radcliffe was a part of the grand opening of The Wizarding World of Harry Potter at Universal Studios in Orlando, Fla.

From the inside of Honeydukes (the candy store stocked with chocolate frogs, for you muggles), Radcliffe told me about the magic of the last decade.

“It’s been kind of wild. It’s just been the most amazing sort of 10 years,” Radcliffe said. “The things I’ll remember is being on the set and filming and doing the work that I just love. It’s kind of what it’s always mainly been about. And I’ve always felt very, very lucky to have fallen into — almost by accident — a job that I absolutely love.”

It’s a job he loves, but a job he’s leaving behind. The final scenes of the last Harry Potter movie, “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows II,” were filmed last week. Emotions on the set in those final days took Radcliffe by surprise. He said he was “weeping like a baby, basically.”

“I ... we ... were very emotional. I’m not a particularly overly emotional kind of person. And so, I didn’t really expect it to be ... to cry ... as much as I did. But I was absolutely devastated at the moment, because I just thought, ‘Well, what am I gonna do now?’ You know? I don’t know what my day-to-day life is without Harry Potter,” Radcliffe said. “I’ve got to sort of find that out.”

And he is finding out by jumping into another project, unlike friend and castmate Rupert Grint, who told me he’s planning on taking some time off. Radcliffe is due on Broadway early next year for a starring turn in “How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying.”

In the meantime, he hopes to have a reminder of his Potter days. “I’m going back (to the ‘Potter’ set) for two — literally two — days, and I’m going to get the glasses. Gotta get the glasses,” he said of the iconic specs Harry wore during his days at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry.
Radcliffe is certain to have a long acting future before him. But will that future include a day where he ceases to wake up without a little bit of Harry Potter inside?

“No. Not at all,” he said. “Every opportunity I get from now until the rest of my life is derived from the fact that when I was 10 years old, I got cast as Harry Potter. And I will be forever grateful and very proud to be associated with it.”

Did you know this about ‘Harry Potter’?
Like the world of Hogwarts itself, there’s always more to know about the actors who brought the story to life. If you watched my videos from Wednesday’s grand-opening party, you know the answer to the first question: Which cast member has never read the final “Harry Potter” book, “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows,” and doesn’t know how the film will end?

The answer is Michael Gambon, who played Dumbledore.

“I haven’t read the ending. I only read the bits where I’m in, because (Dumbledore) wouldn’t know the ending,” Gabon said. “That’s my rationale.”

The second question: Which cast members actually tried out for different parts than the ones in which they were cast, and which parts did they audition for?

The answer: Rupert Grint (Ron Weasley) and Tom Felton (Draco Malfoy), who actually tried out for each other’s parts.

“It could have been that you’d be sitting here and we’d be talking about the opposite roles,” said Felton.

And even though it’s hard to imagine anyone other than Grint as Ron Weasley, Grint said there was another front-runner for the part, too. “I saw his audition tape not long ago, and he was actually quite good,” said Grint.

Charms:

Finite Incantatem- used to stop a spell. Like when they were in the Dueling Lessons and Malfoy and Harry were using the Dancing and Tickling Charm on each other. Snape stopped both charms by using this spell.

Disarming Charm- Expelliarmus (takes the wand from the opposing person and brings the wand to you.)

Confusion Charm (used for Boggarts)- Riddikulus (In the 3rd book, The Prisoner of Azkaban, Remus Lupin brought the class to face a Boggart that lives in a closet. The Boggart would take form of what they most feared and they had to conquer that fear by thinking of something they didn't fear. Neville was scared of Snape, so the Boggart took Snape's form and then Neville thought of his Grandmother, something he did not fear and then said the charm. The Boggart got confused and then had Snape wearing his Grandmother's clothing. C'mon, don't tell me you don't remember that)

Memory Charm- Obliviate (Takes away your memory. Gilderoy Lockhart used it in the 2nd book, Chamber of Secrets)

Summoning Charm- Accio (Mrs. Weasley wanted the candy from George's pocket, but he wouldn't give it to her. So, she used this charm to bring it out of his pocket to her. Useful, no?)

Patronus Charm- Expecto Patrono (Used to get rid of Dementors. You first have to think a very happy thought while saying it for it to work and to be effective.)

Levitating Charm- Wingardium Leviosa (levitates things; make things rise)

Tickling Charm- Rictusempra

Dancing Charm- Tarantallegra (I highly doubt this is used to make someone a better dancer, but rather it's used just to make someone dance.)

Fixing Charm- Reparo (fix something that's broken)

Makes Flowers- Orchideous (it makes the flowers come out from the tip of the wand)

Conjures Birds- Avis (Mr. Ollivander used it and it first made a blast like a gun, but then number of small twittering birds flew out of the end of the wand)

Ripping Charm- Diffindo (to rip something like a bag)

Enlargen- Engorgio

Reduce- Reducio (Makes something smaller. Like a counter thing for the Enlargen spell.

Enlargen Teeth- Densaugeo (thanks goes to WufeiChangx822 for telling/correcting me!)

Fire- Incendio (Lights a fire; to make a fire in the fireplace.)

Light- Lumos (Appears on tip of wand. Think flashlight for wizards/witches.)

Repel Water- Impervius (Used on Harry's glasses when he was playing Quidditch and it was raining)

Create Bandages/Splint- Ferula (have to tap on the body part where you want the bandages/splints to be)

See Invisible Ink- Aparecium (Must tap parchment three times. Snape wanted to see what was on the Maurader's Map thinking it was all in invisible ink.)

Move Objects- Mobiliarbus (moves an object from one place to another)

Moving Body- Morbilicorpus (used when Snape was unconscious in Book 3. I'm unsure whether the person has to be conscious or not for the spell to work)

Last Spell?- Prior Incantato (If you want to know what the wands last spell was, you use this charm. Must have the tip of your wand touching the tip of the one being tested for the charm to work)

Deletrius- When you're done seeing the spell that was used last, you use this charm to clear away the image.

Make Your Voice Louder- Sonorus (heightens your voice tremendously so if your in a big Quidditch field, everyone can hear you)

Quietus- opposite of the above. It makes your voice go back to your normal level.

Curses:
The Three Forbidden Curses: (when used, you gain a lifetime sentence in Azkaban)
The Imperius Curse: Imperio- Gives the caster full control over the person under the spell.
The Cruciatus Curse: Crucio- It delivers a lot of pain to the person who is being casted under this spell. It's a form of torture. (It can drive you insane, like Neville's parents, if you are under it a lot.)
The Killing Curse: Avada Kedavra- True to it's name; unblockable

The rest of the spells are not as severe as the Forbidden ones.

Leg Locker Curse- Locomotor Mortis (The person casted under the spell has his/her legs binded together by an invisible force. Think mermaid, but discount fins and breathing under water.)

Full Body Bind Curse- Petrificus Totalus (your legs get stuck together, as well as your arms. Think worm.)

Freeze- Stupefy (not freeze someone into ice, but make them stop moving. I was thinking of putting this under Charms, but since it hinders someone/thing, I put it under Curses instead)

Ennervate- to un-freeze the person under the above spell

Boils Curse- Furnunculus (makes ugly boils form on the person's skin)

Reducto Curse- Reducto (enables the caster to blast solid objects away with this curse)

Impediment Curse- Impedimenta (slows down the person/thing and used to abstract attackers)

Conjure the Dark Mark- Morsmordre (makes the Dark Mark, a skull with a snake around it, appear in the sky. Used to gather Death Eaters, Voldemort's followers, and to let others know he was there.)

1. Levitating Charm: Wingardium Leviosa - This is just an opinion, but I've always thought that the actual spell was "Leviosa", with a specific word in front of it to designate the target. In this case, "wingardium" would have designated a feather, the object used in the charms class where this spell was learned, as the object to be levitated. Of course, magic being as chaotic as it is, this would sometimes work on other objects even with the wrong designate tag word. For example, when Ron used "Wingardium Leviosa" to lift the Troll's club into the air in the first book, the spell had an effect because there weren't any feathers around, and the spell had to go with the secondary target, the club, which was what Ron was pointing his wand at. However, as the club was only lifted a few feet in the air before dropping like a stone, the spell didn't work as well as it would have had Ron used the right tag word. Again, this is only an opinion, but it is something to consider.

2. Moving Objects: Mobiliarbus - Much like Wingardium Leviosa, this is only an opinion about the wording of the spell. When Hermione used this spell in the third book, she was moving a Christmas tree so as to obstruct some teachers' view of Harry. The suffix of the spell, "arbus", puts me in mind of Arbor Day, the day where everybody plants trees. Therefore, the actual incantation is probably "Mobili-" with the designated target attached on the end. This is why "Mobilicorpus" moves bodies, because of the "corpus" on the end, the Latin word for "body" and the origin of the English word "corpse".

Many thoughtful families are caught in the whirlwind of controversy over the wildly popular Harry Potter books by J. K. Rowling. That is, are these series of novels just harmless, imaginative, children's adventure stories or do they condition young readers to be more open to the occult and serious witchcraft?

It is not easy to answer these questions. Strongly pro-family spokesmen have come out on both sides of the issue.

A clue might be that the establishment media and entertainment industry are ecstatic about Harry Potter. The almost universal enthusiasm from the generally anti-family mainstream media should cause families to pause and at least take a careful look at all the arguments.

It is hoped that the following material will provide quality alternative food for thought to help parents and others to discern the best response to Harry Potter.

Michael D. O'Brien on Harry Potter
We especially direct you to the essay by Michael D. O'Brien (author of A Landscape With Dragons: The Battle for Your Child's Mind) in which he carefully analyzes the Potter phenomenon from a Christian perspective and points out the differences between the Harry Potter series and J. R. R. Tolkien's The Lord of the Rings and C. S. Lewis' The Chronicles of Narnia fantasies. Lord of the Rings has a wizard as a main character, there is also magic, lots of monsters and constant battles between good and evil.

O'Brien's essay is an education in morally sound versus morally dangerous fantasy literature for children. The work goes beyond criticizing the Potter series and stirs the conscience to reflect more seriously on the loss of traditional faith and the danger posed by the secular entertainment media. O'Brien acknowledges the Potter series is a creative, imaginative and powerful drama filled with enticing ideas. However, the allure created, according to O'Brien, heightens the danger that the crude and morally confused concepts will be assimilated and put into practice - especially by some of the more vulnerable in the target audience of impressionable children.

But Watson has had to sport essentially the same hairstyle for ten years while she played Hermione. “I missed all that experimentation that most teenagers go through,” she says. “I’ve wanted to do this since I was about 16, so as soon as I had the chance I was like, ‘Right. This is it.’” Watson, who’s about to enter her sophomore year at Brown University, finished shooting the final two Potter movies this summer — Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 1 will be released Nov. 19, 2010, and Part 2 next summer, on July 15.

Accio! (Goblet of Fire, page 68)
Etymology: L. accedo (to approach, come near / (things) to be added).
The Summoning Charm (incantation: "Accio!") is used to bring an object to you, wherever it may be. Concentrating is essential to succeeding in the spell; the further away an object is and the larger it is, the harder it is to summon. The two most difficult Summoning Charms are in Goblet of Fire and Order of the Phoenix. In Goblet of Fire, Harry summons his Firebolt from inside the castle to the grounds to use it for the first task of the Triwizard Tournament. In Order of the Phoenix, the potency of the charm is demonstrated when Fred and George Weasley summon their brooms (which were chained to a wall) from another part of the castle.

Age Line Charm (Goblet of Fire, page 256)
The incantation for the age line charm is unknown, but the effect is a thin golden line drawn on the surface of the floor that prevents anyone who is too young (or possibly the reverse, too old) from crossing. The effect, in Fred and George’s case, was being transformed into much older versions of themselves.

Aguamenti! (Half-Blood Prince, page 574)
Etymology: L. Agua (water) + Mentis (Mind).
"Aguamenti!", which is taught in the sixth year, is a spell whose affect is a clear jet or fountain of water being emitted from the castor’s wand.

Air-dry Charm (Half-Blood Prince, page 558)
The charm blows a rush of warm air from the castor’s wand. Dumbledore uses the charm to dry off himself and Harry when they travel to the cave.

Alohomora! (Sorcerer's Stone, page 160)
Etymology: Hawaiian. Aloha (goodbye) L. + mora (delay)
The Alohomora Charm (incantation: "Alohomora!") is used to unlock doors or other objects that are locked. The charm also unlocks magically locked doors or objects (see "Colloportus!"). Though the charm comes in handy for Harry, Hermione, and Ron throughout the books, it is not powerful. As shown in Chapter 34, "The Department of Mysteries," in Order of the Phoenix, The Alohomora Charm does not unlock all magically locked doors or objects.

Anapneo! (Half-Blood Prince, page 144)
Etymology: Greek. Anapneo (Breathe).
A useful spell that clears the blocked airway of the castor’s target. Slughorn uses the spell to save a student's life.

Anti-Apparition Spell:
The anti-apparition spell prevents a witch or wizard from apparating. The spell is cast over the grounds of Hogwarts though it was lifted in the great hall during Harry’s sixth year to allow the students to practice for apparition tests.

Anti-Cheating Spell (Sorcerer's Stone, page 262)
The spell is cast on student’s quills before taking tests which presumably stops a student from cheating.

Anti-Disapparition Spell: (Order of the Phoenix page 817)
The anti-disapparition spell prevents a witch or wizard from disapparating; Dumbledore uses it on the recently captured Death Eaters in the Ministry.

Antler jinx (Order of the Phoenix page 677)
The jinx causes antlers to sprout from the victim’s head. In Order of the Phoenix, Pansy Parkinson is hit with this jinx which forces her to miss class for a day.

Aparecium! (Chamber of Secrets, page 233)
Etymology: L. appareo (to become visible, appear, manifest).
"Aparecium!" is used only once by Hermione in an attempt to reveal the hidden contents of Tom Riddle's diary. Though the spell is unsuccessful, Hermione says that it is used to reveal invisible ink.

Apparition/ Disapparition:
An advanced non-verbal spell that allows a witch or wizard to disappear from one place and instantaneously appear at another. Apparating is marked by a loud cracking noise and a sensation similar to being forced through a very tight rubber tube. Apparition can also be performed with multiple passengers via the apparator touching the person they wish to bring with them.

Arrow-wand Charm (Quidditch through the Ages, Ch. 7)
The charm causes arrows to shoot from the castor’s wand. The charm was popular with Appleby Arrows supporters who would use it to celebrate goals; it was outlawed in 1894.

Avada Kedavra! (Goblet of Fire, page 215)
Etymology: Aramaic. abracadabra (ancient spell meaning "let the thing be destroyed")
The Killing Curse (incantation: "Avada Kedavra!") is considered by most wizards the worst curse, as it kills whoever or whatever it is cast upon. The curse is one of three Unforgivable Curses - curses that are illegal and can land a wizard in Azkaban Prison for using them (see "Imperio!" and "Crucio!").

Avis! (Goblet of Fire, page 309)
Etymology: L. Avis (bird)
"Avis!" is used when examining a wand; it will cause small, twittering birds to fly out of the end of a wand in working condition.

Babbling Curse (Chamber of Secret, page 161)
The exact effect is never mentioned in canon but we can assume it causes the castor’s victim to babble for an extended period of time. Lockhart claims to have cured a “simple Transylvanian villager” of the curse.

Banishing Charm (Goblet of Fire, page 479)
The opposite of the Summoning charm, the incantation causes an object to fly away from the castor; it is then ‘banished’.

Bat-Boogey Hex (Half Blood Prince, Ch. 7)
This nasty hex causes the victim’s boogies to grow to the size of bats and then sprout wings and attack the victim’s face. Ginny is said to be especially gifted at this particular hex.

Bewitched Sleep (Goblet of Fire, page 509)
The charm causes the target to be placed in a deep artificial sleep in which (s)he doesn't need to breathe. Dumbledore places Ron, Hermione, Gabrielle Delacour and Cho in this sleep-like state when they are placed in the care of the mere people during the second triwizard task.

Boil-Covering spell (Chamber of Secrets, page 185)
The boil-covering spell causes the target to become covered with boils. Fred and George, for some reason, use it to try to cheer up Ginny.

Bubble-Head Charm (Goblet of Fire, page 506)
The bubble-head charm surrounds a person’s head in a large air-bubble. Both Cedric and Fleur use this charm in the second task of the Triwizard Tournament. It was also very popular towards the end of Harry’s fifth year as students used the charm in effort to combat the growing number of dungbombs and stinkpellets being set off.

Cheering Charm (Prisoner of Azkaban, page 294)
The cheering charm is a third-year charm which cheers a person up.

Colloportus! (Order of the Phoenix, page 788)
Etymology: L. colligo (to bind, tie, fasten together)
"Colloportus!" is used to lock doors or objects that can be locked. However, the spell is not of much use unless dealing with Muggles or a wandless wizard or witch, because the Alohomora Charm will unlock anything locked by "Colloportus!"

Confundus Charm (Prisoner of Azkaban, page 386)
Etymology: L. Confundo (to perplex).
The confundus charm causes the person or object it is cast upon to become confused or misguided.

Conjunctivitis Curse (Goblet of Fire, page 406)
Etymology: L. Conjunctiva (relating to the eye) + itis (inflammation)
The curse affects the visibility of the victim making it very difficult to see and possibly causing pain or irritation in the eyes. Sirius tries to suggest Harry use this spell on the dragon in the first task; Krum does use it.

Conjuring Charm:
Conjures items out of thin air for the castor. Used multiple times through the books for everything from chairs, to liquid, to even sleeping bags.

Corn-Flaked skin Jinx (Order of the Phoenix p. 677)
Warrington, of the Slytherin Quidditch team, is hit with this jinx which makes his skin look as though he had been coated in cornflakes.

Crucio! (Goblet of Fire, page 214)
Etymology: L. crucio (to torture, torment)
The Cruciatus Curse (incantation: "Crucio!") inflicts severe pain on whoever it is cast on. It is used mainly by Voldemort and his Death Eaters when torturing someone. Rowling describes the pain as this: "White-hot knives were piercing every inch of his skin, his head was surely going to burst with pain, he was screaming more loudly than he'd ever screamed in his life..." The length of time the curse is in effect is unknown, but it is presumed to stop after 15 seconds - 1 minute. Wizards and witches (i.e. Frank and Alice Longbottom) can be tortured to the point of insanity by the curse. This explains why the Cruciatus Curse is one of three Unforgivable Curses - curses that are illegal and can land a wizard in Azkaban Prison for using them (see "Avada Kedavra"! and "Imperio!").

Cushioning Charm (Quidditch Through the Ages, Ch. 9)
The cushioning charm creates an invisible cushion on the handle of a broom making it much more comfortable to fly for extended periods of time.

Deletrius! (Goblet of Fire, page 136)
Etymology: L. deleo (to destroy, wipe out, erase)
"Deletrius!" is used only once throughout the Harry Potter series in order to vanish the "echo" of a spell conjured by Prior Incantato! The incantation comes from the Latin word deleo, which means "to destroy, wipe out, erase." This leads to the assumption that the spell would also delete objects, although this has not been proven by the books.

Densaugeo! (Goblet of Fire, page 309)
Etymology: L. dens (tooth), + auctus (growth, enlargement, increase)
"Densaugeo!" causes a person's teeth to grow rapidly. At what point the spell stops is unknown; when Draco hit Hermione with the spell in Goblet of Fire, Hermione's teeth grew down past her collar. The spell can be undone by shrinking the affected teeth.

Diffindo! (Goblet of Fire, page 340)
Etymology: L. diffundo (to spread, pour forth, scatter)
"Diffindo!" causes an object to split or break. Wand aim is essential to the success of this spell. It has only been used once in the Harry Potter books (see above reference).

Disapparition/ Aapparition:
Etymology: L. Appareo (To appear)
An advanced non-verbal spell that allows a witch or wizard to disappear from one place and instantaneously appear at another. Apparating is marked by a loud cracking noise and a sensation similar to being forced through a very tight rubber tube. Apparition can also be performed with multiple passengers via the apparator touching the person they wish to bring with them.

Disillusionment Charm (Order of the Phoenix, page 54)
The disillusionment charm is a concealment charm that feels something like a flood of cold running down one’s body. It hides the magical nature of a person, place, or thing. Hippogriffs and Winged horses are allowed to be kept by wizards so long as they have this charm placed upon them so muggles’ attention isn’t drawn to them.

Dissendium! (Prisoner of Azkaban, page 195)
Etymology: L. dissimulo - antonym (to conceal, disguise, keep secret)
The incantation "Dissendium!" combined with a tap of the wand will open up the hump of a statue of a humpbacked, one-eyed witch (located on the third-floor corridor of Hogwarts). Going through the opened statue leads to a secret path to the wizard village Hogsmeade.

Drought Charm (Goblet of Fire, page 486)
Dries up relatively small amounts of water such as puddles and ponds.

Engorgio! (Goblet of Fire, page 214)
Etymology: Unknown
"Engorgio!" causes something to become several times its normal mass. Moody uses the spell on a spider during the unforgivable curse lesson.

Ennervate! (Goblet of Fire, page 133)
Latin Root: Unknown
"Ennervate!" is used to revive persons who have either been knocked unconscious by normal means or by the Stunning Spell, "Stupefy!" When someone is revived by this spell, their eyes suddenly open and they are dazed. They quickly come to their senses and regain composure.

Entrail-Expelling Curse (Order of the Phoenix, page 487)
A very disturbing spell that presumably causes one’s entrails (intestines) to expel from his or her rear. It was invented by Urquhart Rackharrow

Episkey! (Half-Blood Prince, page 157)
Etymology: Greek. Episkeyazo (To repair)
"Episkey!" Heals minor damage that has been done to a body part.

Evanesco! (Order of the Phoenix, page 234)
Etymology: L. evanescence (to vanish, to disappear, empty)
"Evanesco!" causes what it is cast upon to disappear. In Order of the Phoenix, the spell is used on scrolls and potions. Whether or not the disappearing object vanishes completely is unknown; a spell to bring the object back may exist, but is not verifiable.

Expecto Patronum! (Prisoner of Azkaban, page 238)
Etymology: L. exspecto (to wait for, look for, expect), + patronus (patron, protector)
The Patronus Charm (incantation: "Expecto Patronum!") is highly advanced magic, well beyond the Ordinary Wizarding Level, used to ward off dementors. When used properly, the spell creates a Patronus, which is a guardian that acts as a shield between the caster and the dementor. Each Patronus is unique to the wizard or witch who conjures it, and reflects their personality. In order for the spell to work properly, the incantation must be spoken while the caster concentrates on a extraordinarily happy memory. This causes a Patronus to be conjured; it is successful in warding off dementors because it is "a projection of the very things that the dementor feeds upon - hope, happiness, the desire to survive - but it cannot feel despair, as real humans can, so the dementors can't hurt it." (Prisoner of Azkaban, page 238)

Expelliarmus! (Chamber of Secrets, page 190)

The Disarming Charm (incantation: "Expelliarmus!") is used to disarm someone, and is most commonly used while dueling. Though a simple spell, it can be used to get wizards and witches out of tight situations and close encounters - it saved Harry Potter's life in Goblet of Fire.

Naturally, the extinguishing spell extinguishes fires.

Fidelius Charm (Prisoner of Azkaban, page 205)
Etymology: L. Fidelis (Faithful)
“An immensely complex spell involving the magical concealment of a secret inside a single, living soul. The information is hidden inside the chosen person, or Secret-Keeper, and is henceforth impossible to find -- unless, of course, the Secret-Keeper chooses to divulge it.” If the secret-keeper dies, the secret dies with him or her.

Ferula! (Prisoner of Azkaban, page 376)
Etymology: Unknown
"Ferula!" creates a splint of bandages, a temporary fix for an injured or broken limb.

Finite Incantatem! (Chamber of Secrets, page 192)
Etymology: L. finis (end, limit)
"Finite Incantatem!" is used by Professor Gilderoy Lockhart in Chamber of Secrets, and it stops the effects of both Harry Potter and Draco Malfoy's spells. The spell also works without the "Incantatem" portion of the incantation, which was proved by Remus Lupin in Order of the Phoenix.

Flagrate! (Order of the Phoenix, page 772)
Etymology: L. flagro (to blaze, glow, flame)
"Flagrate!" was used in Order of the Phoenix to mark doors in the Department of Mysteries with a fiery "X". This allowed Harry, Hermione, Ron, Neville, Ginny, and Luna to know which doors they had already gone through.

Flame-Freezing Charm (Prisoner of Azkaban, page 2)
The charm changes the properties of fire so that the flames produce only a gentle tickling sensation.

Fur-growing Spell (Chamber of Secrets, page 185)
The spell causes the target to grow fur.

Furnunculus! (Goblet of Fire, page 298)
Etymology: L. furunculus (boil)
The Furnunculus Curse (incantation: "Furnunculus!") causes ugly boils to break out all over whoever the curse is cast upon. The Furnunculus Curse should not be mixed with Jelly-Legs; tentacles will sprout all over the victim's face.

Golden Bubble Charm (Sorcerer’s Stone, page 197)
The actual name of the charm is unknown, but this refers to the charm which causes non-popping golden bubbles to blossom out of the castor’s wand. Flitwick uses the charm for the Christmas decorations in the Great Hall.

Homorphus Charm (Chamber of Secrets, page 162)
Etymology: Greek. Homo (Same) or L. Homo (Man) + English. Morph. (Change)
Though its exact effects are unknown, Lockhart claims he used it to defeat a werewolf. Perhaps it is used to turn a werewolf into a man, or to turn oneself into the shape of a werewolf thus fooling it.

Horned Tongue Hex (Goblet of Fire, page 339)
Presumably transforms the victim’s tongue into a horn. Harry considers using it on the Hungarian Horntail but decides against it.

Hurling Hex (Prisoner of Azkaban, Ch. 12
A hex placed on a broom that presumably causes the broom to hurl the rider off. Flitwick checks Harry’s Firebolt for this hex when inspecting it in Prisoner of Azkaban.

Impedimenta! (Goblet of Fire, page 626)
Etymology: L. impedimentum (hindrance, impediment, obstacle, difficulty)
"Impedimenta!" slows down an attacker. If the spell is cast upon armor or other metal objects, it will backfire. If the spell is cast upon someone who is standing still, the person standing still will either freeze and be unable to move until they are "unfrozen" or will be knocked off of their feet.

Imperturbable Charm (Order of the Phoenix, page 69)
Etymology: L. Imperturbatus (Calm).
The imperturbable charm creates a magical seal on an object, such as a door, making it impossible for anyone to eavesdrop on what is going on on the other side.

Inanimatus Conjurus (Order of the Phoenix, page 295)
Etymology: L. Inanimus (not living) + Coniurus (conjure).
Though its affect is never given, it presumably has something to do with conjuring inanimate objects.

Imperio! (Goblet of Fire, page 214)
Etymology: L. imperium (power to command, authority, command, rule, control)
The Imperius Curse (incantation: "Imperio!") is used to control the actions of a person. Although few have the willpower to resist the curse, many wizards and witches cannot. Because wizards can completely control the actions of others when they are under this curse, it is one of the three Unforgivable Curses - curses that are illegal and can land a wizard in Azkaban Prison for using them (see "Avada Kedavra!" and "Crucio!").

Impervius! (Prisoner of Azkaban, page 177)
Etymology: L. in (not) + pervius (letting things through)
"Impervius!" was used by Hermione Granger on Harry Potter's glasses in the above reference, and it caused them to repel water. The spell was also used on the faces of the players on the Gryffindor Quidditch team in Order of the Phoenix, giving the players better visibility during practice.

Incarcerous! (Order of the Phoenix, page 755)
Etymology: L. carcer (prison, cell, jail, dungeon)
"Incarcerous!" has been used only once in the Harry Potter books, by Professor Umbridge (see above reference). When Umbridge cast the spell on Magorian the centaur, "ropes flew out of midair like thick snakes, wrapping themselves tightly around the centaur's torso and trapping his arms."

Incendio! (Goblet of Fire, page 47)
Etymology: L. incendia (fire)
"Incendio!" causes a fire to start, and it most commonly used on a fireplace. We are led to the belief that the spell may not work on human beings, due to the fact that it is not an Unforgiveable Curse.

Jelly Legs Jinx (Goblet of Fire, page 608)
The jelly legs jinx causes the victim's legs to wobble uncontrollably like jelly.

Knitting Charm (Order of the Phoenix, page 350)
The knitting charm causes knitting needles to knit on their own.

Langlock! (Half-Blood Prince, page 238)
"Langlock!" Renders the victim speechless by gluing his/her tongue to the top of his/her mouth.

Legilimens! (Order of the Phoenix, page 534)
Etymology: L. lego (to gather, choose, collect, pass through, read) + mens (mind)
"Legilimens!" is mostly used by accomplished Legilimens, those who can read minds. The spell is used when attempting to break into someone else's mind and access their memories - usually memories that they fear.

Levicorpus! (Half-Blood Prince, page 238)
Etymology: L. Levo (To lift up) + Corpus (Body)
Invented by Severus Snape, this spell dangles the victim upside down in the air by his/her ankle.

Liberacorpus! (Half-Blood Prince, page 239)
Etymology: L. Liber (Free) + Corpus (Body)
The counter to Levicorpus, this curse, also invented by Snape, frees the target from the Levicorpus jinx.

Light as a Feather Charm (Prisoner of Azkaban, page 32)
This charm makes objects as light as a feather. Harry considers using the charm on his trunk when he runs away from the Dursley’s.

Locomotor! (Order of the Phoenix, page 53)
Etymology: L. locus (to place, put, position), + motio (to move)
"Locomotor!" causes the object(s) that it is cast upon to levitate. Both of the times the spell is used throughout the books, it was cast on a trunk. In order for the spell to work most efficiently, the name of the object should be stated after the word "Locomotor." Example: "Locomotor trunk!"

Locomotor Mortis! (Sorcerer’s Stone, page 217)
Etymology: Locus (to place, put, position) + Motio (to move) + Mortis (death/corpse)
Not to be confused with the Locomotor incantation, this spell locks the victim’s legs together rendering him/her immobile.

Lumos! (Chanber of Secrets, page 302)
Etymology: L. luma (light)
"Lumos!" is one of the most commonly used spells, because it is a simple spell and useful. As its Latin root implies, "Lumos!" causes a light to appear at the end of the wand that cast the spell. The incantation "Nox!" is spoken when the bearer of the wand wishes for the light to go out.

Mobili-! (Prisoner of Azkaban, page 201, 377)
Etymology: L. mobili (to move), corpus (body), arbustus (planted with trees)
"Mobili-!" allows the caster to move an object. It has only been used twice throughout the Harry Potter series (see above references), both times with different suffixes. The first usage was by Hermione to move a Christmas tree in the Three Broomsticks. The second was to move the body of Professor Snape, who was unconscious at the time. The spell most likely works on corpses and conscious bodies, but there is no evidence to support this. It is interesting to note that the suffix changes according to the object being moved.

Morsmordre! (Goblet of Fire, page 128)
Etymology: L. mors mortis (death)
"Morsmordre!" is the incantation used when a wizard creates the Dark Mark, the sign of Voldemort. The Dark Mark has long been feared, because it was cast over the houses of wizards and witches who had been slain by Voldemort or his Death Eaters.

Muffliato! (Half-Blood Prince, page 238)
Etymology: English. Muffle (to deaden or dampen)
"Muffliato!" fills the ears of those near the witch or wizard casting the spell with an undetectable light buzzing so that the castor can carry on a conversation without being overheard.

Nox! (Prisoner of Azkaban, page 338)
Etymology: L. nox (darkness)
"Nox!" is used to put out the light created by "Lumos!" The spell presumably does nothing to the caster's wand if "Lumos!" has not previously been cast. The use of the spell on lit objects which are disconnected from the caster's wand is unknown.

Obliteration Charm (Order of the Phoenix, page 440)
Etymology: L. Oblitesco (To conceal oneself)
Hermione uses the obliteration charm in Order of the Phoenix to conceal the tracks she, Harry, and Ron leave while they are sneaking to and from Hagrid’s Cabin.

Obliviate! (Chamber of Secrets, page 303)
Etymology: L. oblivio (forgetfulness, oblivion)
The Memory Charm (incantation: "Obliviate!") causes whoever it is cast upon to lose most of their memory. A variant of this spell may be used for memory modifications, but the spell itself is much more powerful than a mere modification. Though a spell may exist that can bring someone's memory back, it is not commonly known in the wizarding world. In Chamber of Secrets, Professor Lockhart lost most of his memory due to this spell. Though he retained the ability to speak and understand the English language, he could no longer recall many basic things (e.g. names, uses of objects, who he was).

Occlumency
Etymology: L.. Occlusum (to block or close) + Mens (mind)
Occlumency is a branch of magic specializing in the practice of blocking one’s mind from an outside mental attack.

Oppugno! (Half-Blood Prince, page 302)
Etymology: L. Oppugno (To attack)
The "Oppugno!" charm causes conjured creatures to attack a target specified by the castor.

Orchideous! (Goblet of Fire, page 308)
Etymology: L. Orchideae (Orchid family of Plants)
The charm conjures a bouquet of flowers that appear at the end of the castor’s wand. Mr Ollivander uses the spell to test Fleur’s wand during the weighing of the wands.

Permanent Sticking Charm (Order of the phoenix, page 110)
We’ve only really seen this spell's effects twice in the series, and both times it was on portraits: Sirius’ Mother’s portrait in the Black family house and the Portrait in the Muggle Prime Minister’s office. The permanent sticking charm makes if very difficult (if not impossible) to remove two things from each other once the charm has been performed.

Peskipiksi Pesternomi (Chamber of Secrets, page 102)
Etymology: Pesky – Pixie – Pester – No – Me = Pesky Pixie don’t pester me.
This funny spell may very well have been made up by Lockhart on the spot. It didn’t work but was meant to somehow subdue or immobilize the pixies Lockhart had let loose in his classroom.

Petrificus Totalus! (Sorcerer's Stone, page 273)
Etymology: L. petra (rock) + totus (whole)
The Full-Body Bind (incantation: "Petrificus Totalus!") causes whoever it is cast upon to lose mobility. Rowling describes the effects of the spell best: "Neville's arms snapped to his sides. His legs sprang together. His whole body rigid, he swayed where he stood and then fell flat on his face, stiff as a board....Neville's jaws were jammed together so he couldn't speak. Only his eyes were moving, looking at them in horror."

Point Me! (Goblet of Fire, page 622)
The Four-Point spell (incantation: "Point Me!") is used as a directional tool. When the caster places his or her wand in their open palm and utters the incantation, their wand will point north, allowing the caster to know what direction they are going.

Portus! (Order of the Phoenix, page 472)
Etymology: L. porta (gate, entrance)
"Portus!" is used to turn an object into a Portkey. Portkeys, first introduced in Goblet of Fire, are seemingly normal objects that transport those in direct physical contact with it to a certain place, usually at a prearranged time. Due to the dangers Portkeys present, authorization is required prior to using the spell. Some Portkeys can be made to transport those in direct physical contact to a certain place the moment they touch it rather than at a prearranged time. Presumably, any object can be turned into a Portkey.

Protean Charm (Order of the Phoenix, page 398)
Etymology: In Greek Mythology the sea-god Proteus possessed the ability to change form.
The protean charm changes the form of an object. Hermione places the charm on the coins the DA use to communicate which enables them to know when to meet.

Priori Incantatem! (Goblet of Fire, page 136)
Etymology: L. priori prius (former, prior)
The Reverse Spell effect (incantation: "Priori Incantatem!") causes a wand to regurgitate an echo of spells it has performed in reverse. When used in Goblet of Fire on a wand that had conjured the Dark Mark (see "Morsmorde!"), a shadow of the gigantic serpent-tongued skull was emitted from the wand.

Protego! (Order of the Phoenix, page 803)
Etymology: L. protego (to protect)
The Shield Charm (incantation: "Protego!") creates a sheild around the caster, protecting them from most harmful spells. Spells exist that can still cause damage to whoever it is cast upon even if The Shield Charm is in use, but the Charm usually saves someone from the worst of the spell cast upon them.

Quietus! (Goblet of Fire, page 116)
Etymology: L. quies quietis (quiet, rest, peace)
"Quietus!" is used to counter the effect of the spell "Sonorus!", which amplifies the voice of whoever it is cast upon. "Quietus!" merely makes the voice softer; it does not completely silence it. The spell "Silencio!" completely quiets one's voice.

Reducio! (Goblet of Fire, page 215)
Etymology: L. reduco (to lead back, bring back, return)
"Reducio!" causes solid objects it is cast upon to shrink. If "Engorgio!" has previously been cast on an object, "Reducio!" will cause it to reduce to its original size.

Reducto! (Order of the Phoenix, page 623)
Etymology: L. Reductus (to reduce)
The Reducto charm blasts away the target object.

Refilling charm
The refilling charm, obviously, refills a target container with a liquid determined by the castor.

Relashio! (Goblet of Fire, page 496)
Etymology: Unknown
"Relashio!" presumably shoots sparks at someone; however, the only usage of the spell in the books was underwater. The underwater effect varies - it instead pelts a jet of boiling water at someone.

Rennervate! (Goblet of Fire, page 133)
Etymology: L. Re (Again) + novare (new) = to make new again
Rennervate revives those who have been stunned, passed out, or otherwise knocked unconscious.

Reparo! (Goblet of Fire, page 169)
Etymology: L. reparo (to restore, renew)
"Reparo!" does exactly what its Latin root suggests - fixes things that are broken. Examples in the Harry Potter books include fixing broken glass, broken china, broken jars, and broken cups. "Reparo!" only works on solid objects.

Reverse Gravity Mist (Goblet of Fire, page 643)
Possibly created by a spell the “odd golden mist” reverses the effects of gravity so that up is down and down is up; Though you are on the ground you feel as though you are upside-down.

Rictusempra! (Chamber of Secrets, page 192)
Etymology: L. rideo risi risum (to laugh at, laugh) + simper (always)
The Tickling Charm (incantation: "Rictusempra!") causes whoever it is cast upon to start laughing uncontrollably. The effects of the charm can be stopped by the spell "Finite Incanatem!" When the Tickling Charm is cast, a jet of silver light comes out of the caster's wand and hits the victim.

Riddikulus! (Prisoner of Azkaban, page 134)
Etymology: L. ridiculus (facetious, laughable)
The spell "Riddikulus!" is used to get rid of a boggart. In order for the spell to work properly, the caster must envision the boggart as something that it finds amusing prior to casting the spell. The spell only turns the boggart into something humorous - what actually gets rid of a boggart is laughter.

Room-securing Spell (Goblet of Fire, page 469)
The room-securing spell secures a room (no suprise there!) by preventing intruders from entering. Snape uses this spell on his office and we are told that only a powerful wizard would be able to break the spell to enter.

Scourgify! (Order of the Phoenix, page 53)
Etymology: Unknown
"Scourgify!" is used to clean. Examples from the fifth Harry Potter book include cleaning Hedwig the owl's cage and ridding a train compartment of a sticky substance called Stinksap. If cast on someone's mouth, the spell causes pink soap bubbles to stream from their mouth and froth to cover their lips, which chokes the victim.

Sectumsempra! (Half-Blood Prince, page 522)
Etymology: L. Sectus p.p. secare (to cut) + simper (always)
Invented by Snape, the Half-Blood Prince, this dark spell slashes the victim multiple times leaving deep bleeding lacerations. With immediate treatment there is only, at worst, a bit of scarring, at best, no blemishes or disfigurement. It doesn’t do much good on inferi, however.

Serpensortia! (Chamber of Secrets, page 194)
Etymology: L. serpere (to creep [snake]) + English. sort (type or kind)
"Serpensortia!" causes a long black snake, poised to attack, shoot out of the caster's wand. It has only been used once throughout the Harry Potter series (see above reference).

Silencio! (Order of the Phoenix, page 375)
Etymology: L. silens (silent, still)
The Silencing Charm (incantation: "Silencio!") causes whoever it is cast upon to lose the ability to make audible noises. A counter curse most likely exists ("Sonorus!" would probably work), but whoever was affected by the spell, wizard or not, would be unable to utter the incantation for the counter curse. The charm works best with a sharp jab of the wand.

Etymology: L. sono (to make a noise, to sing)
"Sonorus!" amplifies your voice in a way similar to that of the muggle "microphone." The spell "Quietus!" will bring the caster's voice back to normal.

Specialis Revelio! (Half-Blood Prince, page 193)
Etymology: L. specialis, (kind) + revelatum (to unveil).
"Specialis Revelio!" identifies the ingredients or enchantments in a potion or on a target object.

Stupefy! (Goblet of Fire, page 129)
Etymology: L. stupefactus (stunned)
The Stunning Spell (incantation: "Stupefy!") stuns whoever it is cast upon, knocking them temporarily unconscious. The victim can be brought back to consciousness by the spell "Ennervate!" A normal Stunning Spell will not cause any damage to whoever it is cast upon, but many Stunners cast at once can cause long-term damage.

Tarantallegra! (Chamber of Secrets, page 192)
Etymology: Italian. tarantella (a dance)
"Tarantallegra!" causes the legs of whoever it is cast upon to jerk around out of control, in a kind of quickstep. The spell is used in the second and fifth Harry Potter books and can be stopped by the spell "Finite Incantatem!"

Tergeo! (Half-Blood Prince, page 162)
Etymology: L. Tergeo (to wipe off)
"Tergeo!" wipes up a target substance. Hermione uses this spell to clean the blood off Harry’s face after Malfoy breaks his nose.

Toenail-growing Hex (Half-Blood Prince, page 238)
The hex causes the target’s toenails to grow at an increasing rate. It is one of the many spells invented by Snape, the Half-Blood Prince.

Tripping Jinx (Order of the Phoenix, page 609)
The jinx trips the target. Malfoy uses this jinx on Harry when running away from the Room of Requirement.

Unbreakable charm (Goblet of Fire, page 728)
The charm makes an object unbreakable. Hermione uses this charm on the jar in which she traps the bug, Rita Skeeter.

Waddiwasi! (Prisoner of Azkaban, page 131)
Etymology: Unknown
The exact effects of the spell are unclear, but the following happened the only time it was used in the Harry Potter books (see above reference): "With the force of a bullet, the wad of chewing gum shot out of the keyhole and straight down Peeves's left nostril." Professor Lupin cast the spell on the piece of chewing gum, which had been stuck in a keyhole by Peeves.

Wiggle and Twitchy ears Hex (Goblet of Fire, page 547)
Harry was hit by this hex in Defense Against the Dark Arts class; it causes the victim’s ears to wiggle and twitch.

Wingardium Leviosa! (Sorcerer's Stone, page 171)
Etymology: L. levo (to raise, lift up)
"Wingardium Leviosa!" causes an object to levitate. Once the caster has an object in the air, it can be moved around with the caster's wand acting as a navigator

If you guessed Lavender Brown, you're correct! Our own Marie Morreale traveled to London to the set of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part I for cast interviews, and got the chance to speak with Jessie Cave who plays Lavender in the final three movies. (Lavender was played by different actresses in the earlier movies.)

Q: When you were reading the Harry Potter books, did you see yourself as the character?
Jessie: Not at all, quite the opposite. I mean I read Half-Blood Prince actually weirdly maybe six months before I got the call to an audition. And when I first read the book I didn't like Lavender at all, and found her really annoying. So then to read it again with me in mind playing her, it was very different. I suddenly realized that actually she's just got this huge crush on a boy. And she does just get heartbroken as well. So I had a lot of empathy for her, as opposed to really disliking her.
[Ratha: I agree!]

Q: She probably is one of the characters fans really don't like. What is their reaction to you?
Jessie: I've gotten loads of really sweet letters really loving Lavender and thinking Ron and Lavender should be together and stuff like that. I don't know. I think she's a source of humor in the film. She's not a caricature but she's very nearly a caricature and I think the response to her is funny.

Q: Have you ever gone through a crush like that?
Jessie: Well, I tried to. I wasn't quite as successful as Lavender, but I remember just getting these huge crushes on boys at school. I remember finding a timetable [class schedule] of one of the boys I fancied, and me and my friends would just follow him around. We knew wherever he was in the school day. I used to walk past his class window, thinking that it would make a difference. That he would see me. I was just pathetic. I shouldn't be repeating it now! I was fourteen or fifteen. Just pathetic!
[Ratha: Don’t worry, we've all been there!]

Q: Was it strange coming into an established series where these people had grown up together? Did you have that sort of "new girl in town" vibe?
Jessie: Yeah, it was incredibly strange given that I've watched them onscreen and read the books since I was young. But it was a relief to meet them and to realize they are actually really normal. They were all lovely and welcoming. It was a brilliant experience.

Q: Who do you think you bonded with most?
Jessie: On set? Definitely Emma [Watson who plays Hermione]. I really got on with Emma really well. I thought she was brilliant.

Q: How was it kissing "Ron Ron" (Won-Won) in Half-Blood Prince?”
Jessie: It was weird! It was just so strange, mainly because it was my first day of shooting. You were really plunged into the deep end. There were so many people in the room as well so it was quite scary. But, also because of that, because of the people and the sets, it's quite easy to pretend you're in that world for a minute.

Q: How many times did you have to take the shot?
Jessie: Quite a few times. Because there were different angles, it was a two day thing!
[Ratha: Hmm. . . I'll bet they went through lots of chapstick.]

Q: Was it easy or difficult for you to play the character?
Jessie: She was really quite liberating to play. It would be nice to be that free with your emotions and your feelings, and profess your love to people. She's quite energetic and so she's quite fun to play.

Q: What is the best memory that you're going to take away?
Jessie: I think the best memory will be my final day of shooting [Half-Blood Prince] and we were over there in the Weasley Wizard Sweet Shop, which I just love because I used to be an illustrator. I did art. And every single box of sweets was decorated and designed and was beautiful and I just remember thinking, "This is brilliant." But not only that, it was because I knew it was coming to an end the filming. It was such a beautiful day and I remember being so happy that I'd been in this film, and I just remember I loved everything about it.
[Ratha: That's awesome. I think it's those moments that we get flashes of every now and then, that put everything in perspective, and make us really appreciate our lives.]

Q: What book do you think Lavender would recommend to read?
Jessie: Probably something like the Twilight series (for ages 12 and up), because she's such a romantic and they've got great love stories going on in them. So I think she would have read them, and wanted to fall in love with a vampire.

Q: If you could play another character in the Harry Potter series, who would it be?
Jessie: I'd love to play Professor Trelawney or Professor Dolores Umbridge, because they're eccentric characters and I love the glasses Trelawney wears.

General Mistakes

In Sorcerer's Stone, US paperback edition, page 96, it says that Percy had a silver prefect badge. However, in Order of the Phoenix, US hardcover edition, page 161, it says that the prefects' badges are scarlet and gold.

In Prisoner of Azkaban, page 262, Harry sends a Patronus at Malfoy and friends (who were dressed as dementors) during the Gryffindor vs. Ravenclaw Quidditch game where Lee Jordan is commenting.

Then in Order of the Phoenix, page 342, Susan Bones asks Harry "So -- is it really true? You make a stag Patronus?" Harry says, "Yes." Lee responds "Blimey, Harry!...I never knew that!"

But he would have seen it at the Quidditch game two years before.

Possible Explanation: Harry's Patronus at the time of the Quidditch match may not yet have been developed enough to take the form of a stag.

In the American version of Prisoner Of Azkaban, page 429, it states that "The exam results came out on the last day of term." On page 430, it continues: "Percy had got his top-grade N.E.W.T.s; Fred and George had scraped a handful of O.W.L.s each."

But in the American version of Half-Blood Prince, pages 79 and 99, Dumbledore says that the O.W.L. results are expected some time later today-- "today" meaning sometime during the summer holidays, and not while the students are still at Hogwarts.
Dumbledore was Transfiguration teacher before he was Headmaster, and Remus Lupin was born in/around 1960 (in OOTP Snape is 35 or 36, so we can make an estimate on Remus' age in POA from that).

Now: On page 352 of the hardback version of POA, in the chapter entitled "Moony, Wormtail, Padfoot, and Prongs," Lupin says, "I was a very small boy when I received the [werewolf] bite," and on the next page says "It seemed impossible that I would be able to come to Hogwarts... But then Dumbledore became Headmaster...", and of course Dumbledore allowed Remus to attend Hogwarts.

Now skip ahead to OOTP. On page 321, in the chapter entitled "The Hogwarts High Inquisitor," McGonagall says she has been teaching at Hogwarts for "thirty-nine years this December." Assuming that McGonagall has always taught Transfiguration (never any other subject) at Hogwarts, and also assuming that at this point Remus would also be 35 or 36 (based on Snape's age), then Dumbledore would have been Headmaster for at least three years before Remus was born. So why did Remus say he wouldn't have been able to attend Hogwarts if Dumbledore hadn't become Headmaster after Remus was bitten?

Book 7 Mistakes

The Elder Wand was supposed to be unbeatable, but Dumbledore defeats Grindlewald to win it.
In chapter nine, Hermione, Ron, and Harry escape the Burrow to Tottenham Court Road where they are followed to a small, shabby cafe by two Death Eaters. The Death Eaters are hit by spells by Harry and Hermione and they have to decide what to do with them. Harry suggests they just wipe their memories, and Hermione says she's never done this. BUT earlier in chapter six Hermione explains that she has modified her parents' memories and sent them to Australia to keep them safe.

Book 6 Mistakes

The cover illustration portrays Dumbledore with a normal-looking right hand, but the text makes it clear that it is Dumbledore's right hand and arm (p. 58) that are blackened and shriveled (p. 48), and that are still in such condition at the precise moment depicted by the cover illustration (p. 567).
In the American edition, when Dumbledore and Harry enter Horace Slughorn's house, something "darkly red and glutinous was spattered over the wallpaper." Later, when asked what kind of blood it was, Slughorn explains, "On the walls? Dragon... My last bottle, and prices are sky-high at the moment." (p. 65) However, in Book 5 (OOTP), when Hagrid finally returns in Chapter 20, he is nursing his bloodied face with a green-tinged steak of dragon meat. "He picked up the steak and slapped it over the left side of his face. Greenish blood trickled down into his beard as he gave a soft moan of satisfaction." (p. 422)
In the American Edition, page 188, Slughorn says, "One tiny bottle of Felix Felicis enough for twelve hours' luck. From dusk til' dawn, you will be lucky in everything you attempt."

But then on page 476, Harry says, "I don't reckon I'll need all of it, not twenty-four hours' worth..."
On page 176 of HBP, UK edition, it states "Malfoy looked rather as he had done the time Hermione had punched him in the face." However, on page 216 of the UK POA, Hermione "...had slapped Malfoy around the face with all the strength she could muster."

Book 5 Mistakes

The cover of OOTP shows Harry in the Department of Mysteries holding his wand in his left hand. However, it is clearly stated that his right arm is his wand arm.
On page 1, Harry is lying in his Aunt's hydrangea bush, but on page 7 he recalls that "someone magical had been near him as he lay among Aunt Petunia's dying begonias..."

Possible Explanation: Aunt Petunia may have had a variety of plants and flowers in her garden.
In the Hardcover U.S. edition of Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, page 12, paragraph three, it says, "Harry stepped into the shadow of a large lilac tree and waited." But lilacs grow on bushes, not trees.
In OOTP, page 60, the description of 12 Grimmauld Place states, "The silver door knocker was in the form of a twisted serpent. There was no keyhole or letterbox." However, it clearly shows on the title page (the drawing of Snuffles exiting number twelve) that there is a keyhole.
On page 166, Chapter 9, "The Woes of Mrs. Weasley," it says: "He pretended to be rummaging for something while Hermione crossed to the wardrobe and called Hedwig down. A few moments passed; Harry heard the door close but remained bent double, listening... He straightened up and looked behind him. Hermione and Hedwig had gone. Harry hurried across the room, closed the door..." But Harry had already heard the door close.
Harry is able to see the Thestrals at the beginning of Order of the Phoenix. It is later explained that you can see them after you have seen death. Harry had seen the death of his mother and possibly his father before he saw Cedric Diggory die, so why didn't he see the Thestrals before?

JKR's response: You can't see them until the death "sinks in."
In OOTP, American edition, hardcover version, on pages 198-199, it says: "The horse was there in front of him, gleaming solidly in the dim light issuing from the station windows behind them, vapor rising from its nostrils in the chilly night air." Before this line, Harry tells Ron that he can see the skeletal horses and Ron can't see them. However, even if Ron couldn't see the horses, he should have been able to see the vapor rising from nowhere.
On page 225 of the American edition, Ron groans about their schedule. "History of Magic, double Potions, Divination and double Defense Against the Dark Arts..." Shortly after, on page 229, Harry and his classmates suffer "an hour and a half's droning". Later, on pages 232-233, Snape informs the class they have "an hour and a half" to complete their assignment. It was a regular History of Magic lesson, yet it lasted the same amount of time as double Potions.

In Chapter 13, "Detention with Dolores," starting on page 234 (259 USA), Professor Grubbly-Plank states, "I want a sketch from each of you with all body-parts labeled by the end of the lesson." The inconsistencies are noticeable at the end of that class; for example, on page 235 (260 USA), it says, "When the bell echoed distantly over the grounds, Harry rolled up his blood-stained Bowtruckle picture and marched off..." On page 238 (264 USA) Harry says that they all (specifically Ron and Hermione) have tons of homework, including to "finish the Bowtruckle drawing," and again it's mentioned on page 241 (268 USA). On page 242 (269 USA), Harry even skips lunch to finish it. Wasn't it due at the end of the original class, therefore not being homework?
In Order of the Phoenix, UK Edition, page 340, it says "but Harry pulled out his Charms books and set to work on finishing his essay..." However, the excerpts from the Charms book have nothing to do with Charms - they sound like potion ingredients: "Therefore much used in Confusing and Befuddlement Droughts..." Then, after his conversation with Dobby on page 342, "He (Harry) bent and picked up his Potions book. He'd have to try and finish the essay tomorrow." It appears that Harry's Charms essay magically transformed into a Potions essay.
In the paperback American Edition, Chapter 22, page 474, it says, "There was a flash of flame in the very middle of the office, leaving behind a single golden feather that floated gently to the floor." But the next paragraph reads: "'It's Fawkes's warning,' said Dumbledore, catching the feather as it fell." Dumbledore couldn't have caught the feather; it was already on the ground.
In the hardback US edition of Order of the Phoenix, Chapter 24 ("Occlumency"), page 526, it says, "'That bossy woman up front 'oo got on with you, she's given us a little tip to move you up the queue. We're just going to let Madam Marsh off first, though--' There was more retching from downstairs, followed by a horrible spattering sound. 'She's not feeling 'er best.'" Nowhere did it say that they had heard retching, so why did it say "more retching"?
On page 651, the illustration shows Fred and George flying into a night sky with a very full moon. However, on page 675 it says, "Fred and George wheeled about to tumultuous applause from the students below and sped out of the open front doors into the glorious sunset."
On pages 662-663 of the US hardback edition, in Chapter 29 ("Career Advice"), Professor McGonagall seems to make a mistake. She tells Harry that he will need a minimum of five N.E.W.T.s, but only four are listed: Defense Against the Dark Arts, Transfiguration, Charms, and Potions. What happened to the fifth subject?
In Book 5, Chapter 30 ("Grawp"), pages 683 and 684, at the Gryffindor/Ravenclaw Quidditch match, it says: "They [Harry & Hermione] found seats in the topmost row of the stands." Later on, when Hagrid comes to take them to see Grawp, it says: "Apparently he [Hagrid] had squeezed his way all along the row behind." How can that be if Harry and Hermione were in the top row?
On page 714 (American hardback), while Harry is vanishing an iguana for his practical Transfiguration exam, the book says that Hannah Abbot "lost her head completely at the next table and somehow managed to multiply her ferret into a flock of flamingos..." However, on the previous page, we are shown that the students were called in in alphabetical order: "Parkinson, Pansy-- Patil, Padma-- Patil, Parvati-- Potter, Harry." If they were all called alphabetically by last name, why are Abbot and Potter together?

Book 4 Mistakes

On page 23 of the American version of Goblet of Fire, when Harry is writing to Sirius about the pain in his scar, it says he was "marveling at the fact that he hadn't thought of Sirius straight away. But then, perhaps it wasn't so surprising -- after all, he had only found out that Sirius was his godfather two months ago." Harry actually found out Sirius was his godfather about eight months before, on that day in the Three Broomsticks in Hogsmeade.
On the bottom of page 148 in the US edition, it states that Ron, Harry, and Hermione had entered Ron's room, which is here called the "attic room." However, on page 154, it states at the bottom that one of the sounds that could be heard from Ron's room was the ghoul "in the attic." How, then, could Ron's room be considered the attic room, when there is a ghoul living above that room in "the attic"?
On page 232 of GOF it reads, "Moody had insisted on putting Harry through his paces four times in a row, until Harry could throw off the curse entirely," referring to the Imperius Curse. However, on page 661 it says, "And Harry felt, for the third time in his life, the sensation that his mind had been wiped of all thought..." Wouldn't that be the fifth time instead of the third? Possible Explanation: The first time Harry's mind was wiped clean was at the Quidditch World Cup and the times that Moody tested the Imperius Curse on Harry count as one time. Therefore, when Voldemort placed the curse on Harry, it was the third time he experienced the sensation that his mind had been wiped of all thought.
In Chapter 26 of GOF, page 505, Krum tells Hermione that she has a beetle in her hair, "but Hermione brushed away the beetle impatiently." In Chapter 37 on the train after she had captured Rita Skeeter, Hermione says, "and Viktor pulled a beetle out of my hair..." Hermione says Viktor pulled the beetle out, yet the book says that she brushed it away.
In Chapter 35 ("Veritaserum") of Goblet of Fire, there is an error on page 594. Dumbledore asks, "How did your father subdue you?" The book then states, "'The Imperius curse,' Moody said." Yet the Polyjuice Potion has already worn off, and Barty Crouch Junior is speaking.
On page 617 of the US edition of GOF, Mrs. Weasley "reminisced at length about" Ogg, the gamekeeper before Hagrid. Hagrid was given the position right after he was expelled in his third year. Since this was over fifty years ago, Mrs. Weasley wouldn't remember another gamekeeper.
On page 705 in the US paperback edition, Fudge says, "You are prepared to believe that Lord Voldemort has returned, on the word of a lunatic murderer, and a boy who...well..." Shouldn't he have said "You-Know-Who" or "He Who Must Not Be Named" like he usually does?

Book 3 Mistakes

The cover of Prisoner of Azkaban (American version) clearly depicts the night that Harry and Hermione save Sirius and Buckbeak. That night is also supposed to be a full moon, as stated in the book. However, on the back side of the cover, the moon appears to be crescent when it should be a full moon.
In the UK version of POA, page 45 primarily states that Harry is being waited on by the manager of Flourish and Blotts. The manager takes him to the Divination section and takes down Unfogging the Future. However, after Harry is fixated on the Death Omens book, the manager is suddenly referred to as the "assistant."
In the US version of Book 3, on page 65, when Mr. Weasley is arguing with Mrs. Weasley at the Leaky Cauldron, he says, "You know what Harry and Ron are like, wandering off by themselves--they've ended up in the Forbidden Forest twice!" Ron has only been in the Forbidden Forest once--to see Aragog in COS.
In the American version of Prisoner of Azkaban, page 72, first paragraph, it states that "Harry and Ron led the way to the end of the train, past packed compartments, to a carriage that looked quite empty. They loaded the trunks onto it, stowed Hedwig and Crookshanks in the luggage rack, then went back outside..."

On page 74, it states that "Harry, Ron, and Hermione set off down the corridor, looking for an empty compartment, but all were full except for the one at the very end of the train. This one had only one occupant, a man sitting fast asleep next to the window."

They had just put their belongings into an empty compartment, so they didn't need to look for another.

On page 76, it states, "A faint, tinny sort of whistle was coming from somewhere. They looked all around the compartment. 'It's coming from your trunk, Harry,' said Ron, standing up and reaching into the luggage rack."

Their trunks couldn't have been in that compartment as they had stowed them in another one.
In Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban, American paperback version, page 186, paragraph 10, there are no end quotes when Professor Lupin is talking. It says, "'They planted the Whomping Willow the same year that I arrived at Hogwarts. People used to play a game, trying to get near enough to touch the trunk. In the end, a boy called Davey Gudgeon nearly lost an eye, and we were forbidden to go near it. No broomstick would have a chance."
Prisoner of Azkaban, UK edition: On page 242, it says, "Harry felt strangely unreal, and even more so when he saw Buckbeak a few yards away, tethered to a tree behind Hagrid's pumpkin patch." Later, on page 293, however, it says, "Harry began to fumble with the rope tying Buckbeak to the fence." Here Buckbeak is tied to a fence, not a tree.
Throughout the series, the future Hufflepuff prefect is referred to as "Ernie Macmillan." However, on page 244 of the American hardcover edition of POA, his last name is spelled "McMillan."
It says on page 250 (American hardback) and page 185 (UK edition), Chapter 13, that all of the players on the Ravenclaw Quidditch team ride on Cleansweep Sevens. However, on page 254 (American) and page 188 (UK) it states that Wood told Harry that Cho Chang (Ravenclaw Seeker) rides a Comet Two Sixty.
On page 324, it says that after his exam with Professor Trelawney, "Harry got up, picked up his bag and turned to go." But when Professor Trelawney began her prediction, the book then says, "Her eyes started to roll. Harry sat there in a panic." How could Harry be sitting when it states that he got up right before Professor Trelawney began her prediction?
On page 341 (American Hardback edition) it says "Ron crawled to the four-poster and collapsed onto it." But then when Professor Lupin comes in, it says, "His eyes flickered over Ron, lying on the floor." This cannot be, as Ron is lying on the bed.
In the American version of Prisoner Of Azkaban, page 380, when the group is exiting the Whomping Willow, it states: "Black saw Snape up through the hole, then stood back for Hermione and Harry to pass."

But then on page 408, after Harry and Hermione turned back time and are watching their other selves, "They saw Lupin, Ron, and Pettigrew clambering awkwardly out of the hole in the roots. Then came Hermione...then the unconscious Snape, drifting weirdly upward. Next came Harry and Black."

The order is different. The first time, it's Snape, Harry, Hermione, and Sirius. The second time, it's Hermione, Snape, Harry, and Sirius.
Page 400 states: "Hagrid turned around and headed back into his cabin, leaving the back door ajar." This allows Harry and Hermione to hear the conversation inside. Then, on page 402, it says: "Hagrid's back door had opened with a bang." How can it open again, since it was never closed?

Book 2 Mistakes

On page 4, the day of Harry's birthday, Rowling says, "and then, exactly a year ago, Hogwarts had written to Harry..." but they had actually written before Harry's eleventh birthday. He'd been receiving them before, he just never had the chance to read one. So technically he had been written to before his eleventh birthday.

On page 95, it states that Nearly Headless Nick "took several deep breaths, and then said, in a far calmer tone, 'So what's bothering you?'" However, on page 506 of GOF, Myrtle says that ghosts do not breathe: "When I can't ...when I haven't...not for ages..."
On page 102 of the American COS: "Several (freshly caught Cornish pixies) shot through the window, showering the back row with broken glass." The glass would have splintered outward, not back into the classroom.
In COS, on page 119 of the American version, it states, "...Harry was dragging his feet along the SECOND floor corridor to Lockhart's office. He gritted his teeth and knocked." However, on page 141, after Mrs. Norris is found petrified on the second floor, Lockhart urges Professor Dumbledore to use his office to examine her, saying that it is just upstairs. That would mean that his office is on the THIRD floor, not the second.
(NOTE: This mistake applies only to the US versions.) When Professor McGonagall took Harry to Professor Dumbledore's office, the password was "lemon drop," but then in the fourth book when he's going to tell Dumbledore about Mr. Crouch in the forest it says "...five minutes later he was hurtling towards a stone gargoyle standing half way along an empty corridor. 'Sher-sherbet lemon,' he panted at it. This was the password to the hidden staircase to Dumbledore's office- or at least it had been two years ago."
The chapter picture for "The Rogue Bludger" shows Harry's left arm deboned, but in the story, his right arm has been deboned.
At the end of the second book Dumbledore tells Harry that Lord Voldemort is the last remaining ancestor of Salazar Slytherin. But it should say that Lord Voldemort is the last remaining descendant of Salazar Slytherin.
In the back of the paperback version of Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets, on the last page where it gives a preview of the next book, it reads: "Harry Potter has to sneak back to his third year at Hogwarts after accidentally inflating his horrible Aunt Petunia." It should say he inflated his Aunt Marge.

In Book 1, on page 27 (American paperback), it mentions that the snake in the zoo winked at Harry. Harry can't be blamed for being so surprised, as snakes don't have movable eyelids.
When Hagrid comes and gets Harry out of the little hut on the rock, they use the boat that the Dursleys used to get to the rock. So how do the Dursleys get off the rock?
On Harry's equipment list in the letter from Hogwarts, "1 wand" is listed twice. This was corrected quickly and only appears in the earlier versions.
Harry's letter from Hogwarts says he may bring a cat, an owl, or a toad, but Ron brings his rat, Scabbers.
Arguable: When Hagrid brought Harry to Diagon Alley for the first time, Harry heard a woman say "Seventeen sickles an ounce for Dragon Liver. They're mad." But Hagrid told Harry that there were seventeen sickles in a galleon. So that would be like saying "100 pennies" instead of a dollar. Think of it this way: if the Dragon Liver weighed three pounds, a galleon (or for our purposes, a dollar) per ounce is quite a lot of money.
Harry buys the book One Thousand Magical Herbs and Fungi, but later in the book it says Harry looked up 'dittany' in One Hundred Magical Herbs and Fungi.
In Chapter 7, page 122, it says that Harry looked up at the Sorting Stool, there were only three people left to be sorted, Professor McGonagall calls the names of four more people instead.
On page 123, in the chapter "The Sorting Hat," Nearly Headless Nick says that he hasn't eaten in "nearly four hundred years"; but in the second book, Harry goes to Nick's 500th Deathday Party, meaning that Nearly Headless Nick has been dead for 500 years, not 400.
On the fourth paragraph of page 133, it says that Hermione lent Harry Quidditch Through the Ages: "She had also lent him Quidditch Through the Ages, which turned out to be a very interesting read." On page 46, paragraph three of QTTA, it says "The most successful Japanese team, The Toyohashi Tengu, narrowly missed a win over Lithuania's Gorodok gargoyles in 1994." However, Harry borrows QTTA in Book 1, which is set in 1991.
On page 153 of the hard-cover US version of Sorcerer's Stone, Fred says: "We haven't won [the Quidditch Cup] since Charlie left..." However, according to JKR, Charlie is three years older than Percy (who is in his 5th year at the time), so Charlie should still have been in Hogwarts the year before. This makes Fred's statement "We haven't won since last year!"
On page 236 of the US hardback version of Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone, it reads: "Wednesday night found Hermione and Harry sitting alone in the common room... The clock on the wall had just chimed midnight when the portrait hole burst open. Ron appeared..." But on page 133, it says: "They had to study the night skies through their telescopes every Wednesday at midnight..." So are they cutting class to discuss Norbert?
On pages 274-275 of the hardback American edition of Sorcerer's Stone, the trio, who are coming from Gryffindor Tower, go up two flights of stairs to get to the third floor. Gryffindor Tower is on the 7th floor, so they should have gone down, not up.
At the beginning of the chess match, Ron is the knight in the giant chess set. However, it later says that he had to 'move ahead one' so the Queen could take him, opening the path for Harry to checkmate the king. If he was a knight, he could only move 1) ahead one, sideways two, or 2) ahead two, sideways one, like an "L."

On pages 297 and 302 in the paperback version of Sorcerer's Stone, Dumbledore said that he and Hermione's owl crossed in mid-air. However, on page 302, Hermione said that they ran into Dumbledore on the way to the Owlery to send him the owl.
On page 205 of the UK SS, Ron says, "Well Harry, you take the place of that bishop, and Hermione, you go next to him instead of that castle." But the castle is next to the knight, not the bishop.

According to Bonnie Wright, there is one golden rule for survival on the Harry Potter set. In a banqueting scene, you must never be filmed actually eating,' she says very seriously.

Otherwise you'll have to keep on for the sake of continuity. The food gets cold and stale, and you start to feel really sick.' (Especially if the director is David Yates, notorious for his numerous retakes.) You have to make sure the spoon only goes as far as your lips.'

Bonnie has learned such tricks the hard way, having joined the cast to play Ginny Weasley, Ron's little sister, when she was a mere nine years old and had no acting experience whatsoever, barring roles in school plays.

Over the past nine years, she has seen her role expand from infant sidekick to leading lady. In the forthcoming film, Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, she and Harry fall for one another, and their relationship proves more durable than his earlier ill-fated fling with Cho Chang.

In fact, as anyone who's read the final book will know (spoiler alert!), Ginny and Harry end up happily married with their own family. They've been discussing how they're going to do that,' she says gleefully. We might be aged with latex wrinkles…'

She'll certainly need them: in the flesh, she looks absurdly youthful, far younger than her 18 years. As she sidles into Shoreditch House, I half expect a kindly waiter to direct her to the crèche on the floor below.

Bonnie is small and willowy, dressed in jeans and unmade-up apart from a dab of mascara. Even the trademark auburn mane is a toned-down shade of ginger biscuit in real life.

They put highlights in it to bring out the red,' she explains. So although she's reached her majority, it somehow seems slightly wrong that she and the equally baby-faced Daniel Radcliffe have been hard at it putting the snog into Hogwarts.

The Half-Blood Prince is the first film in which their lips actually meet, although they've been gazing wistfully at each other for ages.

It was slightly embarrassing because on set everyone knew that it was The Day when we'd kiss,' she admits. It was definitely a case of “pass the mints”. But at the moment of the scene, everything just worked.

Ginny kind of initiates what happens between her and Harry. He doesn't really know what to do because she's his best friend's sister, so she takes the lead. It was very calm and romantic.'

It was a restrained clinch, she confirms: It would have been more embarrassing to do a full-on number.'

The relationship seems to have taken even Bonnie by surprise. As I was reading the sixth book, when their relationship starts, I was quite shocked,' she confesses.

Right from the start, Ginny was sort of Harry's little sister. But I think it's sweet how the books slowly build the relationship.'
Bonnie doesn't have a boyfriend in real life – I'm married to Harry Potter!' she jokes.

Interestingly, my Hogwarts mole reports on-set gossip that she was initially quite keen on Daniel Radcliffe but that by the time he got around to reciprocating the interest, she'd moved on.

But Bonnie denies that she ever had a soft spot for The Boy Who Lived – That would be really embarrassing.' What about his crush on her? I hadn't heard about that,' she says primly, refusing to be drawn.

Bonnie comes across as a pleasant, unstarry, level-headed girl. So it must be disorientating to find herself in receipt of hundreds and hundreds' of fan letters; to find websites dedicated to analysing her looks; and to be recognised across the globe.

I was on holiday with my family in a tiny, tiny village in Greece that had hardly any inhabitants and suddenly all these kids came running up,' she agrees. That's when you see how far the films' influence has spread. It can make you feel a bit weird.'

Her family background is creative but not at all showbiz. She lives around the corner from Shoreditch House with her parents, Sheila Teague and Gary Wright, who own and run London jewellery company Wright & Teague.

The family obsession has always been art rather than acting. We were always being taken round galleries on holiday.'

Bonnie's elder brother Lewis, now 21, started his sister's career. He'd read the first two Harry Potter books and really enjoyed them,' she explains. He said I reminded him of Ginny.'

Then they heard there were castings for the first Potter film all over the country. On a whim, Bonnie asked her mother if she could have a go. I didn't think she'd follow it up. But she got the casting director's number from the publishers and sent in some pictures of me.'

When Bonnie was asked to audition, she hastily read the first book.

The first audition, in [producer] David Heyman's office, was kind of strange, as I didn't have any lines really,' she confesses.

And I had no idea of getting the part since there were probably loads of more experienced kids who'd been acting since the age of two.'

Eventually, her parents were told that she'd landed the role.

We were in the car, going to our house on the south coast, and you know when you can tell that your parents have something to say to you? They were just silent for ages, as if they were about to announce they were getting a divorce. When they finally told me, I remember screaming out of the window all the way up the motorway. I was ecstatic.'

At the time, of course, none of the Wrights knew what they were letting themselves in for.

In the first film, I was only on set for three or four days,' she explains. It was a really interesting thing to do, but not drastic; nothing life-changing. I think if my parents had realised how big it would end up, they'd have worried about how I was going to balance filming with family life and school.

But I started at such a young age, I was able to adapt. We all grew up together doing the film. Living in London has helped a lot. I've been able to go home to my own bed and see my friends at the weekend.'

She had a tutor on set, and when she wasn't filming, attended King Alfred's School, an arty independent school in North London, popular with actors, directors and TV types.

It's much harder for people like Evanna [Lynch, the Irish actress who plays Luna Lovegood].'

When Bonnie first arrived on set, she was a complete rookie who didn't even know what Action!' meant, let alone which her best side was.

Fortunately, as well as having her mother as chaperone, she was also immediately welcomed into the bosom of her substitute family, the Weasleys.

The first day of filming, they introduced me to Julie Walters and said, “This is your mum.”'

She adores what she calls her parallel family', especially Rupert Grint who is lovely'. When we do scenes with all of us, it gets quite giggly,' she says.

You can really tell on screen when people feel a real connection.'

She has also relished the opportunity to work with some great contemporary British actors. They don't have to give you any tips,' she says, Just watching them, you pick things up.'

Aside from Walters and Mark Williams (who plays Mr Weasley), she gets on especially well with Dumbledore, aka Michael Gambon, who is, she says, not as saintly as he looks. He's always good fun on set, always laughing,' she says.

During the climactic scene in which (spoiler alert!) Dumbledore falls to his death from the school's astron-omy tower, she says he was giggling as he lay there.' Her favourite occupation is visiting the different departments, from costume to carpentry.

The level of detail is amazing,' she confides. If there's a book in a scene,
it will be fully printed, even if nobody's
going to open it.'

Bonnie ha also become good friends with Emma Watson, Katie Leung (who plays her love rival, Cho) and Evanna Lynch. When we all come back to do the next film, it's really nice, like going back to school after the summer break. Even the premieres are like a school reunion.'

The comparison is an apt one. Child stars are traditionally doomed, in popular opinion at any rate, to a future of drug abuse and missed opportunities.

But Hogwarts seems to have done spectacularly well with its alumni.

From Radcliffe and Watson down, graduates of the most exclusive institution in history seem to be emerging into adulthood astonishingly well-balanced and mature.

Warner Bros reputedly has a policy of shielding what they call the Potter children' from the limelight, and warning them about the pitfalls of fame.

The kids have remained natural because we have protected them,' claims one executive.

You'll never catch them snorting cocaine at Boujis and they've all managed to do well at school.

Bonnie is no exception. When we meet, she is in the midst of revising for her A levels, which she is sitting before starting work on The Deathly Hallows.

She's taking art, photography, design technology and English, and will start at London's University of the Arts in September to study film and television. I want to continue performing,' she explains. I have such a love for the job. It's been nice to find something that I enjoy and makes me tick.'

A couple of other roles have come her way; most notably, she played the young Agatha Christie in a 2004 TV film.

She's saved up her earnings, which must run into millions, and will fund herself through university. It would have been so stupid to spend it and go out all the time,' she says sagely.

Money goes much faster than you think. It's amazing that I can provide for myself and live comfortably while I decide what to do.' Eventually, she hopes to use it to fund her own films.

She accepts that at the age of 18, her greatest success may already be behind her. In terms of box office sales, nothing will ever be at this scale,' she says. But personally speaking, I definitely think there'll be something bigger for me.'

Birthday girl: Emma doesn't look like she's had much fun as she arrives home

In fact, the only two people noticeably absent at the celebration in London restaurant Automat, were Emma's onscreen best friends Daniel Radcliffe and Rupert Grint.

Perhaps the no-show of the pair, who play Harry Potter and Ron Weasley in the series of blockbuster films, is the reason why the birthday girl looked miserable as she arrived home at 4:30am on Sunday.

However, the chances are she won't be moping for too long if her mountain of presents are anything to go by.

The late finish of the celebration is a rarity for Watson, who abandoned her birthday party early last week so she would be fresh-faced on set.

Annoyingly, Emma, who has a good behaviour clause in her contract with Warner Brothers, wasn't even allowed to go to the MySpace Beyond The Rave party last week which she was due to attend with her financier boyfriend Jay Barrymore.

"Jay was there on his own," I'm informed.

"Emma wasn't happy to be told she wasn't allowed out." Nor will she be happy to hear that Jay was having a long chat with Tamsin Egerton and Tallulah Riley from the St Trinian's movie.

But there is a little silver lining to go with her cloud.

Harry Potter star Daniel Radcliffe is clearly trying hard to ditch his boy wizard image.

The 19-year-old actor confessed in a revealing interview to losing his virginity to an older woman - whose age would raise eyebrows.

Radcliffe admitted he celebrated reaching the age of consent, 16, in the customary manner with a much older girlfriend.

But although he insisted the age difference 'wasn't ridiculous', he did say it 'would freak some people out'.

'For the most part I've been happy every single day,' he said.

'And all the times I've been unhappy, it's never been anything to do with Potter.

HARRY POTTER star DANIEL RADCLIFFE has blasted reports he smoked marijuana at a party - and is considering launching legal action over the claims.
The actor was pictured in Britain's Daily Mirror newspaper on Friday (13Nov09) apparently smoking a roll-up cigarette as a pal painted a comedy moustache on his face at a get-together with friends.
The newspaper alleged Radcliffe had been puffing pot at the bash - but he has denied the claims and is considering taking legal action.
A representative for the star tells WENN, "We categorically deny the allegations regarding Daniel Radcliffe published in today's Daily Mirror. Daniel does smoke the occasional roll-up cigarette, but he was not doing anything more than this. We are considering our position and will be taking all necessary action in relation to such allegations."

GRINT TO PLAY LEGENDARY BRITISH SKI-JUMPER

HARRY POTTER actor RUPERT GRINT is to replace STEVE COOGAN in a film about British ski-jump legend Eddie 'The Eagle' Edwards.
The plasterer was the sole British applicant for the 1988 Winter Olympics ski-jumping competition and became the first competitor to represent Great Britain in the sport.
He became a national treasure despite his lack of success - finishing last in both of his events.
In 2007, Coogan was signed up to tackle the role of Edwards in a film depicting the comical athlete's Olympic journey.
But British newspaper the Sunday Mirror reports Grint will now take over from the Night At the Museum star.
The movie, directed by Declan Lowney, is scheduled to go into production later this year (09)

FELTON DEFENDS CO-STAR RADCLIFFE

TOM FELTON has come to the defence of his HARRY POTTER co-star DANIEL RADCLIFFE following a media report accusing the actor of dabbling in drugs.
Radcliffe was forced to deny allegations he had been puffing on cannabis at a party after a series of pictures published in Britain's Daily Mirror newspaper on Friday (13Nov09) apparently showed the 20 year old smoking a roll-up cigarette.
Felton, who plays Draco Malfoy in the wizard franchise, admits his pal was left shaken by the claims but he's convinced Radcliffe will be able to weather the media storm.
He tells U.K. TV show GMTV, "I spoke to him briefly just to make sure he was OK and he seemed to be dealing with it alright. I think he's come to terms with the fact that the press are not always on his side. It doesn't make it easier when people are publishing articles that aren't true.
"Obviously I feel for the guy, I know he's got a very strong head on him and I know he'll sail through this one easily. It's not easy, but no one can do it better than Daniel."

HARRY POTTER star EMMA WATSON struggled with her first week of university life as her fellow students gawped at their celebrity classmate.
The 19-year-old British actress has begun her first year at the prestigious Brown University in Providence, Rhode Island, where she is studying English literature.
The paparazzi has followed the star to her campus - and her classmates were just as fascinated by Watson's presence.
She says, "The first week was a little bit tough - you know, I'm a new face in America, let alone the town where I'm studying, so it took a while for people to kind of get used to seeing me around."
When asked how she balances her classes with her career, Watson adds, "I don't really know to be honest! I think you make time for things that you care about. You seem to make extra hours in the day for things you're passionate about and I love everything that I do so it's all worth it!"

It is only now that Harry discovers that under the Ministry's influence the newspaper The Daily Prophet has launched a smear campaign against anyone who claims that Voldemort has returned, leaving Harry feeling isolated and betrayed by the Wizarding community. Harry and the other members of the Order fly to 12 Grimmauld Place, the home of Sirius Black, where they meet with Sirius, Remus, Ron, Hermione and others. Later, Ron and Hermione express concern about Harry's situation with the Ministry.

Harry and Arthur Weasley head to the court where Harry's trial will take place, briefly spotting Lucius Malfoy speaking with the minister on their way. With the help of Dumbledore and Harry's neighbour, Mrs Figg, Harry is cleared of all charges at the Ministry and is allowed to return to Hogwarts. However, during Harry, Ron and Hermione's fifth year at Hogwarts School, the Minister for Magic Cornelius Fudge appoints a new Defence Against the Dark Arts teacher, Dolores Umbridge, a Senior Ministry official who refuses to teach practical magic to her students, as the Ministry fears Dumbledore will organize his own personal wizard army. One day during class, Harry is punished for claiming that Cedric Diggory was killed by Voldemort, which according to the Ministry's official policy is a lie. In Umbridge's office, Harry is forced to write "I must not tell lies" repeatedly as punishment. However, the sentence is magically imprinted on his hand instead, causing scarring. Meanwhile, as Umbridge's control over the school increases, Ron and Hermione aid Harry in forming a secret defence group, calling themselves "Dumbledore's Army" or DA for short. Harry, Ron and Hermione start teaching at Hogwarts, training students in defensive spells to become part of the Army. Draco Malfoy and other Slytherin students are then recruited by Umbridge to try to uncover the secretive group, creating the Inquisitorial Squad. Meanwhile, Harry officially begins a relationship with Cho, as they kiss one day after training. In an attempt to tighten her oppressive grip on Hogwarts, Umbridge dismisses Professor Sybill Trelawney and tries to have her banished from Hogwarts, which is only prevented after Dumbledore's intervention.

Harry's nightmares continue, including a dangerous attack upon Arthur Weasley in the Department of Mysteries involving Nagini, Lord Voldermort's snake, which happens to turn true. Harry's anger starts to get out of control, as his mental connection to Voldemort grows stronger. Fearing Voldemort will exploit his connection with Harry, Dumbledore immediately instructs Professor Snape to give Harry a crash course on Occlumency lessons in an attempt to block Harry's mind from the Dark Lord's influence.

Meanwhile, Bellatrix Lestrange escapes from Azkaban along with other Death Eaters after one of the prison walls is damaged by lightning flashes. At Hogwarts, Umbridge, Filch and her loyal Inquisitorial Squad, uncover Dumbledore's Army after interrogating one of the students, Cho Chang for whom Harry had developed intense feelings. Dumbledore is questioned and makes an impressive escape as Fudge orders his arrest. With Dumbledore gone, Umbridge becomes the new Headmistress, and her sinister dominance over the school continues. Later, Hagrid introduces Harry, Ron and Hermione to his half-brother giant, Grawp. Later, Harry reverses Snape's spell by glimpsing into Snape's mind. It is then that Harry learns that Harry's father used to bully Snape when they were students at Hogwarts, which appears to be the real cause behind Snape's resentment towards Harry. Meanwhile the Weasley twins, Fred and George formulate a plan of their own.

During an O.W.L. exam, the Weasley twins execute their plan, launching a firework display in the great hall causing chaos for Umbridge, Fudge and the students of Slytherin house. As the students cheer joyously outside, Harry suffers a vision of Sirius trapped within the bowels of the Ministry being interrogated about the Order. Harry, Ron, and Hermione rush to search for Sirius, but Umbridge, soon after, catches the trio attempting to use the Floo Network, and begins interrogating Harry. She calls for Professor Snape to bring Veritaserum for use during her interrogation, as she has for all of her previous interrogations, but Snape tells her that the supply has been exhausted. Hermione then tricks Umbridge into entering the Forbidden Forest along with Harry and her in search of a faux weapon, really leading her to the hiding place of Grawp who has since freed himself from the tree he was latched to, when a herd of centaurs, who have their own issues with the Ministry, emerge and carry the Headmistress into the darkness. Hermione and Harry head back to Hogwarts to find Ron and other DA members, Luna Lovegood, Neville Longbottom, and Ginny Weasley, the group decided to fly to London by way of the Thestrals (winged horse-like magical creatures) to the Department of Mysteries of London City in an attempt to save Sirius.

The six enter the Department of Mysteries, where they uncover a prophecy involving Harry and Voldemort, but are soon ambushed by Death Eaters, including Lucius Malfoy and Bellatrix Lestrange, Sirius's deranged cousin. After a brief battle and a failed escape attempt, the Death Eaters, manage to take Ron, Hermione, Luna, Neville, and Ginny as hostages threatening to kill them if Harry does not hand over the prophecy. Sirius appears, with the other members of the Order of the Phoenix, and attacks the Death Eaters causing Lucius to drop the prophecy, which then shatters. A battle erupts as the Death Eaters try to stop the students from escaping, resulting in Sirius's death at Bellatrix's hand. Back in the Atrium, Harry corners Bellatrix, where he struggles with his desire to enact the Cruciatus curse. Voldemort himself appears, ready to kill Harry when Dumbledore emerges to face his battle against Voldemort.

A brief but furious duel between Voldemort and Dumbledore takes place, in which Bellatrix escapes through the Floo Network. When Voldemort disappears, and the battle seems over, Harry suddenly finds himself possessed by Voldemort-- recalling images of his past, of his family and his friendsbut throws off Voldemort's influence, stating that he is stronger than Voldermort through his friends and his ability to love. Ministry officials, including Fudge, hastily arrive via the Floo Network moments before Voldemort disappears.

In the aftermath of the battle, the Ministry is forced to end their smear campaign and Umbridge is removed from Hogwarts, awaiting a formal investigation. Dumbledore explains that he had attempted to distance himself from Harry all year, hoping it would lessen the risk of Voldemort discovering and using the connection between the two. While the students head home from Hogwarts at the end of the academic year, Harry tells his friends that they have one thing Voldemort does not: love, a power worth fighting for.

Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire (2005)

Harry, Ron and Hermione enter their fourth year at Hogwarts. After having a strange dream of the Dark Lord and his Death Eaters, Harry Potter awakes at the Weasleys' house where they shortly depart for the 422nd Quidditch World Cup. After the match, the camp is attacked by Death Eaters. The three later arrive at Hogwarts, where they find that the magical school will be hosting a legendary event called the Triwizard Tournament, in which one wizard each from two rival schools and Hogwarts will compete in three dangerous tasks. When the schools of Beauxbatons and Durmstrang, the rival schools, arrive, the rules are announced. Meanwhile, Alastor "Mad Eye" Moody arrives at Hogwarts at the request of Dumbledore to be the new Defence Against the Dark Arts teacher. Moody is a very eccentric man, noted for his paranoia and his wildly roaming "mad eye". People over seventeen who are interested must insert their name into the Goblet of Fire, and those chosen will be the Champions of their respective school. Three champions' names come out of the Goblet of Fire, Cedric Diggory from Hogwarts, Viktor Krum from Durmstrang and Fleur Delacour from Beauxbatons, and then the goblet unexpectedly produces a fourth, Harry Potter, although he is an under-age fourth year who never entered. Although Harry insists that he did not enter his name, his selection prompts a certain amount of jealousy and suspicion on part of his fellow students - including Ron, who believes that Harry is attempting to make himself the centre of attention again. This causes a brief period of resentment and estrangement between the two friends (including Ron swearing, telling Harry to piss off!), which is soon healed, however. Dumbledore tells Alastor to keep an eye on Harry, without him knowing it.

The Tournament begins with the first event, in which the four champions must each battle a dragon to retrieve a golden egg. Upon using the Accio spell to summon his broom, he flies out of the arena. The dragon breaks free of its chain and chases Harry through the Hogwarts grounds, where it runs into a stone bridge and falls dead. Harry gets the egg, which, when opened, will reveal a clue about the second task. When Harry opens it, though, only a horrible screeching is heard. They are soon informed of the Yule Ball, a Christmas ball held during the Triwizard Tournament. Ron and Harry find it hard to get dates to the ball, but finally get the Patil twins to join them, while Hermione goes with Viktor Krum, stunning everyone with her suddenly beautiful appearance at the ball. Ron is so jealously enraged at seeing Hermione with Krum (formerly his idol) that he attacks her and accuses her of "fraternizing with the enemy". The ensuing argument leaves Hermione in tears (in the film version only).

Cedric Diggory, the other Hogwarts champion, informs Harry to submerge the egg in water and open it. There he will hear the clue. Harry does as told in the prefects' enormous collective bath. The clue mentions that merpeople have taken something of Harry's and that they must retrieve it from the Black Lake. Just as the three are trying to find a way to breathe underwater, Ron and Hermione are called to McGonagall's office. Neville tells Harry about gillyweed, which, if eaten, can let you grow webbed hands and feet and gills. During the second task, Harry follows a mermaid to where they have chained Ron, Hermione, Cho Chang, and Fleur's sister. Cho Chang is retrieved by Cedric, Victor, the Durmstrang champion, takes Hermione. Harry takes both Ron and Fleur's sister, since she did not show up.

Finally, the third task arrives. A huge maze has been set up, in the center of which is the Triwizard Cup. The first to touch the cup wins the task. Dumbledore allows Harry and Cedric to be led into the woods first, because they both received first and second place in the previous task. Both Cedric and Harry grab the cup at the same time. The cup, which is actually a portkey, sends the two to a graveyard, where Wormtail appears with a form of Voldemort. Upon command, Wormtail kills Cedric and binds Harry to a tombstone. Wormtail performs a spell over a burning cauldron and drops Voldemort into it. A fully revived Voldemort emerges from it and summons the Death Eaters with the Dark Mark. After explaining to them how he lost his powers to Harry, he duels Harry Potter, in which their spells join in a chain. Harry breaks the chain and gets Cedric's body. After grabbing the cup again, he is transported back to the school where everyone learns that the Dark Lord is back and has killed Cedric. Mad-Eye Moody takes Harry to his office in order to help Harry calm down. Moody suddenly starts to change his appearance when he learns that he has run out of Polyjuice Potion. Moody tells Harry that it was he who told Hagrid to lead Harry and Cedric into the woods first. Moody also reveals that it was he who told Cedric to open the egg underwater and that he gave Neville the book that led him straight to discovering gillyweed in it. Harry realizes that Moody put his name in the Goblet of Fire and that he bewitched Krum. As Moody is about to kill Harry, Dumbledore, Snape, and McGonagall burst in the room and save Harry. Dumbledore makes Moody admit that he is an imposter and that the real Moody is locked in a chest. The imposter rapidly changes from appearing like Moody to his own appearance, Barty Crouch Jr, a Death Eater working for Voldemort. The tournament ends and the other schools depar

The film 'Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban' is based on the novel of the same name by the author J. K. Rowling. It is the third in the Harry Potter series of seven instalments, and corresponds with the third academic year at 'Hogwarts' the magical school. Harry Potter is the famous young wizard at the centre of the story.

It opens at the Dursleys' home where Harry Potter (Daniel Radcliffe) lives and is staying, as usual, during the summer holidays. Uncle Vernon's (Richard Griffiths) sister Marge (Pam Ferris) comes to visit and treats Harry with general contempt. She viciously insults him and his parents, angering Harry who unwittingly uses his innate magical powers to cause her to inflate, and float off, out of the Dursleys' house and into the twilight. Harry flees the Dursleys' home, furious. At first he walks with determination but soon grinds to a stop as he realises he hasn't anywhere to go. He sits down at the edge of the road with his trunk. His surroundings stir as the wind picks up and a street lamp flickers above him. A jet black dog emerges from the bushes opposite, growling at him and he raises his wand. At that instant however, the eccentric Knight Bus, for lost witches or wizards, makes a sharp appearance and escorts Harry on a wacky journey to the wizards' pub 'The Leaky Cauldron.' While there, Harry learns that Sirius Black (Gary Oldman), an alleged supporter of Lord Voldemort, the dark wizard, has escaped from Azkaban prison. Harry must meet the Minister of Magic Cornelius Fudge (Robert Hardy) and he fears expulsion from Hogwarts for his using of under-age magic out of school. However, the matter is surprisingly dropped as "...the Ministry doesn't send students to Azkaban for blowing up their aunts." While at The Leaky Cauldron Harry also reconvenes with his two best friends, Ron Weasley (Rupert Grint) and Hermione Grainger (Emma Watson), and the rest of the Weasley family. Mr. Arthur Weasley (Mark Williams) pulls Harry to one side to warn him about Sirius Black. He suggests that Harry needs to be cautious of Sirius Black due his allegiance with Voldemort. He believes that Harry is the only thing which stands in the way of Voldemort returning to power and that it is on this premise that Sirius Black has escaped from Azkaban. To find and kill Harry Potter.

Harry, Ron and Hermione board the train to Hogwarts, discovering in their compartment the sleeping Professor Remus Lupin (David Thewlis) who is to be the new 'Defence Against the Dark Arts' teacher. Harry airs his concerns about Black's escape and his possible objective to Ron and Hermione. Tension builds during their discussion however as the train is stopped on a bridge and the lights pop out in each cabin. Ron peers out of the window, concerned that "...there is something out there." The train is violently jolted and a great cold descends around them, ice creeping over the windows. In the corridor outside, a scary dark creature slowly appears, floating towards them. It opens the door to their cabin and begins to engage frighteningly with Harry, sucking at his whole body. The sleeping teacher suddenly wakes, stands up, and repels the creature with a very bright white light emanating from his wand. Harry faints. On his coming round Lupin gives him chocolate to eat and explains that the creature is a 'Dementor' which drains happiness from anything it approaches. The Dementors ordinarily guard the wizard prison, 'The Prison of Azkaban' but are out searching for the escapee Black, and entered the train looking for him. Harry heard a woman screaming during the ordeal, but no one else heard it.

As Harry begins his third year at Hogwarts we learn of some significant changes. Alongside the official announcement of, the formerly encountered, new Defence Against the Dark Arts teacher, Professor Lupin. Rubeus Hagrid (Robbie Coltrane), the groundsman, becomes additionally a professor of 'Care of Magical Creatures.' Also, Hermione seems to be taking nearly twice as many classes as everyone else, including some which are taught simultaneously.

During a Divination class, Professor Trelawney (Emma Thompson) foresees Harry's death in the tealeaves of his cup, which form the shape of a 'Grim' or large dog. In tealeaf reading this symbolises death. In Hagrid's first class, Draco Malfoy (Tom Felton) deliberately provokes Buckbeak, a Hippogriff, into attacking and injuring him. Draco's father, Lucius Malfoy, a powerful Ministry of Magic member of staff, files an official complaint. In Defence Against the Dark Arts, Professor Lupin instructs the class in the defeat of a Boggart, which changes its form to appear as ones greatest fear. When Harry steps up, it manifests itself as a Dementor, however Lupin steps in to defeat it before Harry gets the chance.

Harry is told he cant go on the school outings to Hogsmeade, a local village inhabited solely by magical beings, as he hasnt got his admission slip signed and watches his friends go without him. Instead, he meets with Lupin, and Harry discovers that the reason he wasn't allowed to fight the Boggart was that Lupin had been worried it would take the shape of Voldemort. This concern catches Harry by surprise, because Harry had been thinking even more fearfully about the Dementors. Later that night, Sirius Black breaks into Hogwarts and destroys the Fat Lady's (Dawn French) portrait that guards Gryffindor Tower. The students spend the night sleeping in the Great Hall while the teachers search the castle for Black. Because Black is believed at large in the castle Dementors are sent specifically to patrol the perimeter of Hogwarts. Next day, Professor Snape (Alan Rickman) replaces Lupin as Defence Against the Dark Arts teacher while Lupin is intriguingly "...incapable of teaching at the present time." In an odd divergence from routine, he teaches the class about Werewolves.

During the next school Quidditch match, a popular wizard sport, several Dementors approach and try to engage their powers over Harry, causing him to faint and fall off his broomstick. Dumbledore (Michael Gabon) breaks Harry's fall, but his broomstick flies off into the magical tree, the 'Whomping Willow' and is destroyed. Dumbledore is angry that the Dementors came within school grounds as they are prohibited from doing so. Harry wonders why the Dementors seem to have a special interest in him and Lupin reveals that this is due to the horrors within Harrys past. Harry considers that he needs to know how to defend himself against them and convinces Lupin as such, who agrees to teach him.

At the time of the next school outing, still keen to go to Hogsmeade, Harry attempts to sneak into the village under his Invisibility Cloak, but is caught by Fred and George Weasley (James and Oliver Phelps), who give him the Marauder's Map. It is a map of the entire school and shows the real-time locations of everyone on the grounds. Fred and George also tell Harry that the map shows the whereabouts of several secret passages out of Hogwarts, ideal for leaving undetected. Once in Hogsmeade village, and back under his Invisibility Cloak, Harry catches sight of Fudge and Professor Minerva McGonagall (Maggie Smith) chatting in the street, discussing Black and himself. He follows them as they go inside and is shocked to overhear that Sirius Black was his parents' best friend and is still his godfather and a legal guardian. Black supposedly divulged the Potters' secret whereabouts to Lord Voldemort and murdered their friend Peter Pettigrew, as well as twelve Muggle bystanders (non-magic humans). Harry vows to kill Black. On returning from the outing we find out from Hagrid that as a consequence of Lucuis Malfoys complaint, Buckbeat has been sentenced to death. That same night, after hours, Harry is astonished when he sees the aforementioned Peter Pettigrew's name on the Marauder's Map. He goes looking for him but can't find him. Discovered out of bed, the map is confiscated by Lupin who, covering for Harry, tells Professor Snape it is merely a joke parchment and of no significance.

Harry has the agreed private class with Lupin in which he must generate a Patronus, a shield that is used to repel the Dementors. Lupin has him test himself out on a Boggart. He fails the first time, but conjures one on his second attempt. Later on, returning to a recently finished Divinations class to bring back an orb knocked over by Hermione, Harry rencounters Professor Trelawney. She grabs Harry by the shoulder, speaks as though possessed, and predicts that "..the Dark Lord's servant will return to him that night and that innocent blood shall be spilled."

When Harry, Ron and Hermione learn that Buckbeak is to be executed, they visit Hagrid in his hut to console him. On the way Draco taunts them about it and Hermione punches him in the face. While there, Hagrid says they cannot remain with him during the execution and that Buckbeat can't be set free since they would know it was Hagrid. Hagrid has also found Ron's lost rat Scabbers, and returns him to Ron. Ron had wrongly believed that his rat had been taken by Hermione's cat. As the execution party approaches the hut, stones fly in through the window and they leave and run back to the edge of the castle, watching the execution from afar. Scabbers then bites Ron, who chases after him, finally collecting him under the Whomping Willow. The black dog makes another appearance and attacks Ron and drags him, along with Scabbers, into a hole at the tree's base. Harry and Hermione follow, finding a tunnel which leads them to the Shrieking Shack.

Inside, in a fast moving scene, Harry finally confronts Sirius Black who he has been led to believe wishes to kill him, and whom he wishes to kill. We discover that as an illegal Animagus, Black can transform into any animal at will, thus he is also the infamous black dog. Professor Lupin, who had spotted the group on the confiscated Marauder's Map, suddenly bursts in and embraces his old friend Black. Confronted by Hermione, Lupin admits to being a werewolf. Lupin and Black then explain that Black is not the one who betrayed the Potters, rather it was Peter Pettigrew (Timothy Spall), who has been hiding for twelve years in his Animagus form as Scabbers, Ron's rat. He is Voldemort's servant, not Black, and framed Black for his crimes. Meanwhile Snape bursts in also confronting Black but is disposed of by Harry. Harry is sceptical of the story until Black and Lupin force Pettigrew back into his human form, and after some squealing resistance Pettigrew finally confesses that it is true, proving Blacks' innocence. Black further clears up the misunderstanding by explaining that on discovering Pettigrew was still alive he escaped Azkaban in order to kill him. As Lupin and Black are about to kill Pettigrew, Harry stops them, and showing Pettigrew mercy, tells him they will take him back to the castle, where he can be left for the Dementors.

As the group heads back to the castle, Harry and Sirius pause and chat optimistically. Harry remarks that Pettigrew would be have been of no use dead. Firstly he didnt want his father's two best friends to be killers, and secondly he is the key in proving Sirius' innocence. Sirius suggests Harry comes to live with him. They are disturbed however, when, as the full moon rises it causes Lupin to turn into the dangerous werewolf since he had neglected to take his potion which inhibits this transformation. Black responds by transforming again into the black dog in order to protect Harry, Ron and Hermione. The werewolf and Black have a vicious fight. During the ensuing commotion, Pettigrew transforms himself back into the rat and escapes, not pursued. Harry runs forward in his angst at Sirus torture at the hands of the werewolf, inadvertently attracting its attention. However while approaching Harry it is distracted by some other distant werewolf cry. Meanwhile, Sirius, badly injured, has moved down to the nearby lake where he lies at the edge. Harry follows and kneels over him. As he does so, a swarm of Dementors approaches them. Harry produces a Patronus to try and fend them off, however it is not nearly strong enough and they both begin to submit to the Dementors. Then on the other side of the river appears the brilliant white symbol of a stag and an immense Patronus which drives the Dementors away. Harry faints.

Harry awakens in the hospital wing to hear the news that Sirius Black has been captured and is about to be given the Dementor's Kiss, to suck out his soul. Dumbledore enters and Harry, Ron and Hermione try and convince him of Blacks' innocence. Dumbledore somehow already knows but says that their word alone wont be believed. He suggests mysteriously however, that Harry and Hermione travel in time back by using Hermione's time-turning device, which we now find out is how she has been attending simultaneous classes, and at least save both Black and Buckbeak from their fates. Hermione turns her hour-glass necklace back three turns (three hours), and Harry and Hermione are together thrust into the past, where they observe and remould the evenings events. They throw stones through the window of Hagrid's hut, alerting themselves to the approaching execution party. They rescue Buckbeak while the execution party is inside with Hargid shortly before the execution, thus absolving Hargid of any blame. Hermione diverts the attention of the werewolf Lupin stalking the past Harry with an imitation of another werewolf's cry. And, from a hiding place in the forest, Harry watches the Dementor sequence and realises as it fails to appear, that he must have been the one who conjured the powerful Patronus. After saving his past self and Black from the Dementors, Harry and Hermione fly to the tower on Buckbeat where Black is imprisoned, and rescue him. Harry and Black share a moment of contemplation as since Black is going to be on the run, still wanted and without proof of his innocence, their relationship will now be sadly fraught with complications and Harry's dream of living with his godfather is shattered. However, Harry takes comfort in knowing that Black, although still considered a fugitive, is at least free and safe for the time being. Black and Buckbeak leave, Black riding on his back. Harry and Hermione make it back to the hospital wing just as the timeline restores itself, and a reticent Dumbledore merrily bids them goodnight.

As the school year end approaches, Lupin announces that he is resigning, believing that parents of the students would not be comfortable in the now open knowledge that he is a werewolf. He returns the Marauders Map to Harry since he is no longer a professor. Harry later receives a gift from an unknown source, a Firebolt, an extremely fast racing broom. Hermione holds up a large feather, also contained within the parcel, confirming that Sirius must have sent it. Harry tries it out and is whisked away from sight, ending the film with the snapshot image of Harry flying his new broom, ecstatic.

Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets (2002)

While home with the Dursleys for the summer, Harry Potter (Daniel Radcliffe) is not getting any mail from his friends, Ron (Rupert Grint) and Hermione (Emma Watson). On his twelfth birthday (July 31) Harry is visited by Dobby, a house-elf, who warns Harry that he will be in mortal danger if he returns to Hogwarts. Harry ignores Dobby's warning and is determined to return. It turns out that Dobby has been collecting Harry's letters to make it seem as though his friends had forgotten him, hoping Harry might then not want to return to Hogwarts. Seeing that he will have to use force, Dobby decides to destroy, by the use of a charm, a large cake that Aunt Petunia (Fiona Shaw) has baked for an important dinner party attended by Vernon Dursley's (Richard Griffiths) boss and his wife. Harry is blamed by the Ministry of Magic for Dobby's charm, and is told that if he does magic outside school again, he will be expelled. On learning that Harry cannot perform magic outside school, the Dursleys, previously fearful of his wizarding, lock Harrys books and wand away and Vernon Dursley fits bars onto his bedroom window, making Harry a prisoner.

A few days later, Fred, George (James and Oliver Phelps) and Ron Weasley come to his rescue in their father's enchanted Ford Anglia. After a pleasant summer together in the the Weasley house, everyone heads to Platform 9¾ to take the Hogwarts Express back to school. To their shock, Harry and Ron are unable to enter the barrier between platforms 9 and 10. In desperation, they fly to Hogwarts in the car, crashing into the Whomping Willow and damaging Ron's wand. The semi-sentient car ejects them and their belongings and disappears into the Forbidden Forest.

Harry soon finds he is the unwanted centre of attention of three people: the vain new Defense Against the Dark Arts Professor, Gilderoy Lockhart (Kenneth Branagh), admirer Colin Creevey (Hugh Mitchell), and Ron's sister, Ginny Weasley (Bonnie Wright), who fancies Harry. Events take a turn for the worse when the Chamber of Secrets is opened and a monster stalks the castle, with the power literally to petrify several students. According to legend, the Chamber was built by Salazar Slytherin and can only be opened by his heir, in order to purge Hogwarts of students who are not pure-blood wizards. Many suspect Harry is the Heir of Slytherin, especially after he inadvertently speaks Parseltongue (the language of snakes), a rare ability Harry gained after Voldemort's murderous attack upon him when he was an infant.

Harry, Ron, and Hermione attempt to discover the Heir of Slytherin's true identity. Using Polyjuice Potion brewed by Hermione, they disguise themselves as Slytherin students, Crabbe (Jamie Waylett) and Goyle (Josh Herman), hoping to learn from Draco Malfoy (Tom Felton) the identity of the Heir. Malfoy, they learn, does not know who the Heir of Slytherin is, but he inadvertently provides Harry and Ron with an important clue about the Chamber of Secrets.

Unfortunately, the hair that Hermione took from Millicent Bullstrode's uniform was from a cat, and as the polyjuice potion is only intended for human transformations she assumes a feline appearance; it takes a little more than a month to restore her normal human form. During her time in the hospital wing, the shades are pulled around Hermione's bed so that she does not have to endure the shame and humiliation of being stared at by other students, with rumours going around about her disappearance, and Harry and Ron bring Hermione her homework at her request. She is released from the hospital wing in early February, her normal appearance restored, and looks over the diary of Tom Riddle (Christian Coulson) when Harry shows it to her, but she cannot make much of it.

The attacks increase throughout the year, petrifying more students, including Hermione. Most horribly, a message written on a wall declares that Ginny Weasley has been taken into the Chamber, where "her skeleton will lie forever."

With the help of Ron and Moaning Myrtle (Shirley Henderson), Harry discovers the entrance to the Chamber of Secrets. They force Gilderoy Lockhart, a fraud who wipes clean other wizards' memories and claims their achievements, to go with them. Once they find the entrance to the Chamber, Lockhart attempts to use Ron's broken wand to erase Harry and Ron's memories, but the spell backfires on to himself and brings the ceiling caving in, separating Harry from Ron and Lockhart. Lockhart revives, but has now lost his own memory.

Harry makes it to the Chamber where he finds an unconscious Ginny. He also meets a young man named Tom Riddle, who claims to be a "memory". Harry learns that Ginny, under the control of Lord Voldemort, opened the Chamber. Voldemort, whose real name is Tom Marvolo Riddle (the anagram of which is "I am Lord Voldemort"), imprinted his memory in an enchanted diary, in order to one day continue the work he began when he reopened the Chamber fifty years ago ridding Hogwarts of non-pureblood witches and wizards. It was Hagrid, a Hogwarts student at the time, who was blamed for the attacks and expelled.

Tom Riddle's memory grows more powerful as it steals life from Ginny's body, and it tries to kill Harry by setting loose a basilisk (the monster responsible for petrifying the students). But Dumbledore's (Richard Harris) phoenix, Fawkes, arrives carrying the Sorting Hat, from which Harry draws out the sword of Godric Gryffindor. Fawkes blinds the basilisk, destroying its fatal gaze, and Harry slays it with the sword. In attempting to slay the basilisk Harry's arm has been pierced by the creature's fang. Harry seems to be dying quickly from the venom but Fawkes comes to heal Harry with his tears (phoenix tears have healing power). Harry stabs the diary with one of the basilisk's fangs, and the memory of Riddle is destroyed, while Ginny revives from her near-death state. She recovers fully, along with Hermione, Mrs Norris, Justin Finch-Fletchley, Nearly Headless Nick (John Cleese), Colin Creevey, Penelope Clearwater and the other students who were petrified.

Harry realises it was Lucius Malfoy (Jason Isaacs), Draco Malfoy's father, who slipped the diary into Ginny's cauldron when he encountered the Weasleys in a Diagon Alley bookshop, but he is unable to prove it. Dobby reveals he is the Malfoys' servant, and knowing their treachery, had been trying to protect Harry all year. In gratitude, Harry wraps the diary in one of his old socks and hands it to Lucius. Lucius throws away the sock, but Dobby catches it. This constitutes, in Dobby's eyes, a gift of clothing the traditional manner in which a master frees a house-elf from servitude. The freed Dobby declares he is eternally grateful to Harry and protects him from an attempted reprisal from Lucius. In the film of the same name the word "Avada" is used as the beginning of Lucius Malfoy's curse, suggesting that it is the Avada Kedavra (the killing curse). This is not mentioned in the novel.

Dumbledore dispels Harry's fears that he could have been put into Slytherin rather than into Gryffindor when he tells Harry that it is his choices that define him and not his abilities, and that Harry could not have wielded the sword of Gryffindor if he did not truly belong to that house.

Lord Voldemort, an evil and powerful dark wizard, has just been defeated. When he tried to kill a one-year-old boy, Harry Potter (Daniel Radcliffe), the killing curse rebounded upon him, destroying his body. Harry is left an orphan with a lightning-bolt scar on his forehead, Voldemort having killed his parents, Lily (Geraldine Somerville) and James (Adrian Rawlins) Potter. Professors Dumbledore (Richard Harris) and McGonagall (Dame Maggie Smith) and Gamekeeper Hagrid (Robbie Coltrane) leave him on the doorstep of his ultra-conventional, insensitive, negligent Muggle (non-magical) relatives, the Dursley family, who take him in. Harry's relatives decide to conceal his magical heritage from him and make him live in a cupboard under the stairs for ten years.

Shortly before Harry's eleventh birthday, he receives a letter addressed specifically to him. His outraged uncle, however, reads and burns it before Harry has a chance to look at the contents. The sender does not give up, and the Dursleys receive successively larger numbers of the same correspondence. Soon, his Uncle Vernon (Richard Griffiths) becomes so paranoid that the Dursleys, with Harry in tow, hide in a hut on a small island to escape. That night (which happens to be before Harry's birthday), he is visited by an enormous man named Hagrid who bursts through the locked door of the hut. With Hagrid holding the Dursleys at bay, Harry finally reads his letter, in which he learns he has been invited to study magic at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. The next day Harry and Hagrid leave the hut and head to Diagon Alley in London (the secret magical location hidden behind the famous wizarding pub The Leaky Cauldron). Harry enters the wizarding world for the first time, learns to his surprise that he is famous, and meets the new Hogwarts Defense Against the Dark Arts teacher, Professor Quirrell (Ian Hart). He takes the train to Hogwarts from Platform Nine and three-quarters, befriending Ron Weasley (Rupert Grint), and meeting Hermione Granger (Emma Watson), a Muggle-born witch.

Upon arrival, the Sorting Hat places Harry, Ron and Hermione in Gryffindor House. Draco Malfoy (Tom Felton), an arrogant and elitist student, gets placed in Slytherin. At the end of his first week at Hogwarts Harry and Ron discover that Gringotts, the wizarding bank, was broken into and a vault that Harry and Hagrid visited had been the subject of the robbery. Later, Harry discovers he has a talent for riding broomsticks, and after an incident with Malfoy, is recruited to join Gryffindor's Quidditch team as a Seeker. He is the youngest Quidditch player at the school in a century, much to Malfoy's displeasure.

Harry, Ron, Hermione explore Hogwarts late at night and accidentally stumble across the door to a corridor. A three-headed dog, christened Fluffy by Hagrid, guards a trapdoor. On Halloween, Quirrell informs everyone that a troll has entered the castle; it gets locked in the girls' bathroom by Ron and Harry, where Hermione is crying after Ron has insulted her. When they realize their mistake, Harry and Ron fight the troll to save Hermione, and the three become best friends.

At Harry's first Quidditch match, Harry's broom becomes possessed, nearly knocking him off. Hermione sees Professor Severus Snape (Alan Rickman), the sinister Potions master and head of Slytherin House, staring at Harry and mouthing words, making her believe that Snape has caused the broom to misbehave with a dark curse. Hoping to save Harry, Hermione sets Snape's robes on fire, distracting him and others and allowing Harry to survive.

At Christmas, Harry receives an Invisibility Cloak, once belonging to his father, which renders its wearer invisible. Harry uses it to explore the Restricted Section in the library to research information on Nicolas Flamel, a name Hagrid lets slip when confronted about his knowledge of Fluffy. Eventually, Harry learns that "Nicolas Flamel is the only known maker of the Sorcerer's Stone, which produces the Elixir of Life which will make the drinker immortal."

Harry sees Snape trying to get information from Quirrell about getting past Fluffy; Quirrell says he does not know what he's talking about. Harry, Ron, and Hermione are sure that Snape is trying to steal the Philosopher's Stone in order to restore Lord Voldemort to power, but Hagrid denies it. While at Hagrid's hut, the trio discover a dragon egg Hagrid was nursing in a fire. Later the egg hatches a Norwegian Ridgeback dragon, and Hagrid decides to call him "Norbert". The friends are nervous for Hagrid, since dragon breeding had long been outlawed in the wizarding world, and Hagrid had something of a reckless nature, who has long since nursed a strong desire for a dragon. Finally, Harry, Ron, and Hermione are able to convince Hagrid to let Norbert go live with other dragons of his kind in Romania, and arranged for the dragon, (now quite large in size), to be picked up by Ron's older dragon trainer brother, Charlie.

Harry, Hermione. and Draco are caught out late at night (Ron is meanwhile in the hospital wing, being treated for a bite from Norbert), and are forced to serve detention with Hagrid in the Forbidden Forest. Harry sees a hooded figure drink the blood of an injured unicorn, which makes Harry's forehead scar start burning. Firenze, a centaur, tells Harry that it is a monstrous thing to slay a unicorn, let alone drink its blood. He also tells Harry that unicorn blood is like Elixir of Life, and that the hooded figure is in fact Voldemort.

Harry, Hermione and Ron find out that Hagrid, while he was drunk in a pub, has told a hooded stranger how to get past Fluffy, and they believe the theft of the Stone is imminent. Rushing to finally confide in Professor Dumbledore their news, they meet Professor McGonagall, who is shocked to find out how much they knew about the Stone, but reassures them all the same that it is safe in the castle. She also tells them that Dumbledore has been sent away on an important mission by the Ministry of Magic. Positive that Dumbledore's summons was a red herring to take Professor Dumbledore away from Hogwarts, the trio make plans to thwart Snape's theft of the stone. They set out to reach the stone first, navigating the security system set up by the school's staff, which is a series of complex magical challenges. The three make it through together until finally, Harry must enter the inner chamber alone. There he finds that meek Professor Quirrell, not Snape, is attempting to steal the Stone. Realizing that Snape was trying to protect him from harm all along, Harry confronts Quirrell and survives a second encounter with Lord Voldemort, who has possessed Quirrell and appears as a ghastly face on the back of Quirrell's head. Quirrell gets blisters when he touches Harry's skin, and Harry suffers because of his close proximity to Lord Voldemort. Dumbledore arrives just in time to rescue Harry. Voldemort then pitilessly abandons Quirrell, who dies in the aftermath of his possession.

Dumbledore reveals to Harry that Harry's mother died to protect Harry as an infant. Her pure, loving sacrifice provides Harry with an ancient magical protection from Voldemort's lethal spells and also prevents Voldemort from touching Harry without suffering terribly. Dumbledore also says that the Sorcerer's Stone has been destroyed to prevent future attempts by Voldemort to steal it.

Whilst in the Hospital wing Harry asks Dumbledore why Voldemort attempted to kill him when he was a young child. Dumbledore tells Harry when he is old enough he will tell him why.

Finally, at the end-of-year feast, the House Points totals are given: Gryffindor is in last place. However, Dumbledore gives a few "last-minute additions", granting points to Harry, Ron, Hermione, and Neville, so that Gryffindor wins the House Cup.

I hope my head doesn't get very big. I'm just going to keep my feet on the ground, stick to friends and family and try and lead a normal life.

[On being a known actress]: Most people are really nice but some stare, like you're some kind of zoo exhibit and not a real person with real feelings. Even when you take away all the glamour and attention and premieres and everything, it still comes down to the fact that I'm acting.

In fact, I don't see them like normal boys. I mean that I cannot imagine me going out with one of them. For me, they are like my best friends. I can laugh and talk about everything with them without any taboo. I really like them a lot.

[On other roles]: Now that I've played the snotty, bossy, posh Hermione Granger, I'd like to play some American high school girl. I want to play something totally different. I want to play every kind of character and every point of view, but I'm probably going to be playing Hermione for a while.

[If she'd sooner have a great Hollywood career or a great marriage]: Hmmmmm... Can't I have both? But if I would really have to choose, then I'd pick a great marriage. I think it would be amazing if I would get to play beautiful parts and win Oscars, but that would all mean nothing if my parents and friends weren't there with me. What is success when you don't have anybody to love? No, I'd rather be happily married.

[On watching the earlier movies]: It's like baby photos... I look like a chipmunk!

Daniel Jacob Radcliffe was born on July 23rd, 1989 to Alan Radcliffe and Marcia Gresham. He began performing in small school productions as a young boy. Soon enough, he landed a role in David Copperfield (1999) (TV), as the young David Copperfield. A couple of years later, he landed a role as Mark Pendel in The Tailor of Panama (2001), the son of Harry and Louisa Pendel (Geoffrey Rush and Jamie Lee Curtis). Lee Curtis had indeed pointed out to Daniel's mother that he could be Harry Potter himself. Soon afterwards, Daniel was cast as Harry Potter by director, Chris Columbus in the film that hit theatres in November 16, 2001, Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone (2001). He was recognized worldwide after this film was released. Pleasing audiences and critics everywhere, filming on its sequel, Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets (2002), commenced shortly afterwards. In fact, that night at the play, Heyman couldn't help just staring at Dan because he though he was perfect to play Harry. Stage is much more intimidating than going before the cameras, because you can really screw up, and can't do a retake.

When I go back to school everyone asks a lot of questions. Then, after about a week, when I've answered everything, we get back to normal.

It's too far down the road to decide about a fifth movie. I'm still the same age Harry is, and I haven't actually grown that much.

Fans are really important for me. And if they take pains to write me, it's the minimum that I answer myself.

I think I'm highly normal. I'm attending school after acting, I'm going out with friends, going to the cinema - I'm just doing everything a normal teenager does. People think I can't leave the house without being in a crowd of fans - but that's not true. I'm able to do more things than people might think.

I'm thrilled of the acceptance I get abroad. The people are so hearty, warm and grateful and I feel privileged having seen so many countries and some of the greatest monuments.

When I get into trouble at school I'd like to take an invisibility cloak, drape it over me and sneak out the door. Or I'd like to have a 3-headed-dog because then no one would argue with me.

I played a trick on the make-up department where I put a fake blood capsule in my mouth, pretended to trip on the stairs and let the blood come out of my mouth. They really fell for it, then they chased after me with a water pistol.

Everyone on the set has a mobile phone, and I found by pushing a few buttons, they could be programmed into different languages. I fixed Robbie's (Coltrane) to speak in Turkish.

I don't understand girls, but I'm slowly learning.

[on saying that he'll do all of the Harry Potter movies] "Ultimately it comes down to whether we're still enjoying it. If we are then I think we would be sort of stupid not to do them. As long as I'm doing other stuff around the same time, I think it'll be fine. Also, I sort of try to read the books when they come out impartially and not make up my mind, but the fact is when I was reading the sixth, Harry Potter And The Half-Blood Prince, there were bits in there where I was going, 'God, I would love to do that because it's so good.'"

(on whether he is religious) "I'm not a religious person. My mom was of Jewish blood and my dad was Protestant... I'm very interested in religion as something to study, but I'm not a religious person in the slightest."

I didn't look at the nudity and go, oh great. But it's the same as doing a role with an accent or a particular affectation. You look at the character first. Lots of the actors that I've admired have at one stage or another taken their kit off. It's a rite of passage. That iconic scene is the physical and emotional climax of the play. So if I do that with pants on, it would be crap.

I feel OK about my body. Not totally, of course, no one my age does ... but I've gone to the gym to make sure. And many of the actors I admire, like Gary Oldman, have gone naked.

People will always remember Harry, but I think if I work hard enough other characters will stick in their minds as well.

[About the "Equus" paparazzi]: They were outside the theatre every single night, but we came up with a cunning ruse. I would wear the same outfit every time - a different T-shirt underneath, but I'd wear the same jacket and zip it up so they couldn't see what I was wearing underneath, and the same hat. So they could take pictures for six months, but it would look like the same day, so they (photos) became unpublishable. Which was hilarious, because there's nothing better than seeing paparazzi getting really frustrated.

What everybody would love to see is me having ditched school and then just going wild. That's what I'm determined not to give them.

It's not so much that they don't want me to grow up. It's that they're annoyed that I'm growing up adjusted. They'd much rather I was growing up and going wild and crashing cars.

I'm lucky enough to have a job that I love, and a relatively down-to-earth life.

(On being bullied in school) Some people did get very aggressive. People say it was just jealousy, but I don't think it is jealousy. I think it's just 'We can have a crack at the kid who plays Harry Potter.' As Eddie Izzard says, these people always hang about in fives, because people these have a fifth of a personality each.

I hate celebrity culture but I'm unavoidably part of it. These people are celebrities as a by-product of what they do. People read every little thing about Peter Andre and Jordan and I couldn't care less. They don't want to work, have no interests, no passions, nothing and yet they seem to be held up on pedestals. I don't think they should be trying to push themselves onto us. It does annoy me of course, but I'm part of it.

Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows is an upcoming two-part fantasy film adapted from the novel of the same name by J. K. Rowling and scheduled to be released on November 19, 2010 (Part I) and July 15, 2011 (Part II).^[3]^[4]

The two movies, Part I and II, will be the final instalments in the globally successful Harry Potter film series. Both parts are written by Steve Kloves, who wrote all but the fifth film, and directed by David Yates, who directed the previous two films. David Heyman and David Barron are producing both parts. Production shooting began in February 2009.

Production

Development

The decision to divide Rowling's final book into a two-part movie came from the original declined proposal to split Goblet of Fire back in 2004. Deathly Hallows is being shot back to back,^[5] and treated as if it were one film.^[6] The idea to split the book into a two-part movie had been around since the middle of 2007,^[7] but only really came into serious consideration after producer David Heyman was able to talk to writer Steve Kloves when the 2007–2008 Writers Guild of America strike ended and Heyman had Rowling's approval.^[6] As of April 2009, Kloves began working on the script of second part.^[8]

According to Warner Bros. executive Alan F. Horn it will allow "an extra hour and a half to celebrate what this franchise has been and do justice to all the words and ideas in the amazing story."^[5] Heyman described the workings behind the split: "Deathly Hallows is so rich, the story so dense and there is so much that is resolved that, after discussing it with [Rowling], we came to the conclusion that two parts were needed."^[5] Kloves was not able to start work on the script until the WGA strike ended.^[9]

"Years ago, we briefly — and seriously — considered doing Goblet of Fire as two films. So this concept is not altogether new. As for Deathly Hallows, I intuited — almost from the first moments I began reading it and certainly once I'd finished — that to realize the story in a single film was going to be a tall order. Others in 'the group' felt similarly. So the idea of two films began to get kicked around as early as late summer of 2007. We didn't take it lightly. But ultimately everyone felt that despite the challenges it would present, it was the most sound creative decision.
I'm sure some will think we're crazy. My wife looked at me cross-eyed when I first mentioned it. But I'm really excited about it because it should allow us to stretch a bit with the characters and give them the proper send-off. The story is highly emotional and those moments deserve time to breathe. And, personally, I feel we owe it to [author] Jo [Rowling] — in order to preserve the integrity of the work — and the fans — for their loyalty all these years — to give them the best and most complete experience possible."^[7]

Before David Yates was officially chosen to direct the film, others had expressed an interest in the job. Alfonso Cuarón, director of Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban, had said that he would be "tempted" to return to direct.^[10] Guillermo del Toro, who passed on Prisoner of Azkaban, had expressed interest in directing Deathly Hallows,^[11] but an increased workload over the production of The Hobbit films (Part I due out 2011) ruled him out of the project.^[12]

Heyman noted that the films will be a closer recreation of the books than the previous films because of the length a two-part adaptation entails.^[8] Daniel Radcliffe said: "This is a road movie, particularly in Part One of the film. People have been so used to seeing Harry Potter at Hogwarts and we're just not there for the first part of the film. That seems to have really freshened things up, and hopefully will get people seeing the films with fresh eyes again, because its just a totally different look when you're not just sat in the same room the whole time."^[8]

Although Yates had retained composer Nicholas Hooper for Half-Blood Prince, Hooper has confirmed he will not be returning for the Deathly Hallows.^[13] In July 2009, John Williams, composer of the first three film's scores, said that he will return as long as it fits with his schedule.^[14]

Yates and Heyman have noted that some of the events of this film had an effect on the way the sixth film was written.^[15]

Filming

The Shell Cottage constructed on Freshwater Beach West for the filming of Deathly Hallows.

Pre-production began on January 26, 2009, and filming began on February 19, 2009 at Leavesden Studios, where the previous six films had been shot, and Pinewood Studios.^[16]^[17] Eduardo Serra is the cinematographer.^[18] Yates said that the film will be shot "with loads of hand-held cameras. I want to shake things up every time I go into this world. I like experimenting as we go along."^[19] The shoot will take a projected 250 days.^[20] As of October 2009, Ralph Fiennes is filming his role as Lord Voldemort. Many of the adult actors are also to begin filming this month.^[21]

During production at Leavesden, Radcliffe's stunt double David Holmes suffered a serious spinal injury during filming of an aerial sequence, which left him paralyzed. Holmes fell to the ground following an explosion which was part of the stunt.^[22]^[23]^[24]

Casting

Joshua Herdman announced on August 9 that Jamie Waylett would not be reprising his role as Vincent Crabbe for Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows. Waylett's character will be written out with his role in the plot taken over by Herdman's character.^[86]

Emma Thompson will not return as Professor Trelawney, opting instead to work on a sequel to Nanny McPhee.^[87]

Jason Isaacs considered not returning for the film, before the book was released, as he was worried that the senior Malfoy would have very little screen time due to the character's imprisonment in the previous story. Meeting Rowling at an awards dinner he fell to his knees and said "'Get me out of prison, I beg you.' [Rowling] looked over her shoulder and looked back at me mouthing 'You're out. Chapter One.' And that was it, that's all I had to know, and I signed up immediately."^[88]

Director David Yates has announced that, for the final scene in the film which is set nineteen years after the film's main story, older actors will not be cast to play the main characters. Special effects will be used to depict the cast members as adults.^[89]

It appears that a mixture of special effects and makeup will be used to make the actors in the Seven Potters scene look like Daniel Radcliffe.^[90]

Danger lies within the walls of the first place Harry Potter called home. Now with Dumbledore gone, the wizarding world being under the reign of Lord Voldemort, and his prime Death Eater, Severus Snape, being Hogwarts headmaster, everything seems to have fallen. But hope still dwells within their hearts, since Harry Potter is who the Prophecy speaks of.

Here, Harry, Ron and Hermione get out of Hogwarts and try to find missing Horcuxes for they hold the key into finally defeating Lord Voldemort. But there's just one thing: He doesn't know what each Horcrux looks like, where they are or how would he even destroy it.

Meanwhile, he is told Dumbledore left them a will: A Deluminator for Ron, An old book of Children's tales for Hermione, and the Golden Snitch for Harry. However, none of these made any sense of how it was to help them find Horcruxes.

But with the book, Hermione finds a story of three brothers who had three powerful objects given to them by Death: An unbeatable and the most powerful wand: the Wand of destiny; A stone that brings people who have entered Death's grasp back to life: The Resurrection Stone; and a cloak whose cloth is as supple as water and as light as air, Death's Cloak of Invisibility. With the help of Xenophilius Lovegood, Luna Lovegood's father, they learn that these are, what some people call, the Deathly Hallows and any beholder would be "The master of death".

Harry thinks if it is really this way it's gonna be: Hallows versus Horcruxes?

Harry falls curious and obsessed with the Deathly Hallows and yearns into finding them; he believes it was another alternative into defeating Voldemort.

During his journey, he sights glimpses into Voldemort's mind, making him see everything through Voldemort's eyes. Despite the burning sensation he feels while invading Voldemort's mind, he finds help from it and learns that Voldemort is also on a quest. A quest to find one thing that he only heard of from a fairy tale, and assumed for it to exist: The very own Wand of Destiny, the unbeatable wand.

More and more tragic deaths come, and it is up to him to make each of theirs a noble rest. He meets near-death moments and narrowly escapes them, but in the end, "neither could live, while the other survives"

Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 1 is the first half for the finale of the last book of the Harry Potter series.

Synopsis for Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince (2009)

Scarred by his experience at the Ministry of Magic with Voldemort, Harry is reluctant to return to Hogwarts. Dumbledore encourages him to continue, after taking him to see a former professor, Horace Slughorn, hoping that Slughorn would return to Hogwarts and take Harry under his wing.

Meanwhile, Death Eaters begin to wreak havoc both towards Muggles, destroying the Millennium Bridge, and Wizards, kidnapping the wandmaker Mr. Ollivander and destroying his Diagon Alley shop. Bellatrix Lestrange entreats Severus Snape to enter an Unbreakable Vow with Draco Malfoy's mother, Narcissa, assuring that he will complete the task assigned to Draco should Draco fail and that he will protect him and make sure he doesn't get hurt. Harry, Ron and Hermione, while in Diagon Alley, spot Draco entering Borgin and Burkes and taking part in a ritual with other Death Eaters, and become suspicious of his actions.

At Hogwarts, the school is under tight security to prevent the Death Eaters from entering the school. With Slughorn back to teach Potions, Snape is given Defense Against the Dark Arts. Harry and Ron are encouraged by Professor McGonagall to take up Potions now that Slughorn, with lower standards, is teaching the class; however, as neither was expecting to take the course, they are given textbooks. Harry's book is annotated with more exact instructions to complete potions, giving him an edge over the other students, and finds that it once belonged to the "Half-Blood Prince", a term Hermione cannot figure out. Meanwhile, Ron becomes the successful Gryffindor's Quidditch goalie, attracting the love of Lavender Brown, much to Hermione's chagrin. Harry is also upset over Ginny's attraction to Dean Thomas. During the Christmas Break while Harry and Ron are at the Burrow, the Death Eaters come intending to kidnap Harry, but are forced to retreat after they are outnumbered by Order of the Phoenix members. Before they leave they set fire to the Burrow, and the Weasleys are gathered outside the house, leaving Harry regretting the evil that he has brought down upon people he cares about.

Dumbledore reveals to Harry through the Pensieve memories of Tom RiddleVoldemort's original nameincluding a false memory from Slughorn, when Riddle asked him about a certain resistricted Dark Art. The memory fails to reveal this art, and Dumbledore believes that the key to defeating Voldemort is to learn what Dark Art Riddle asked about, and instructs Harry to further confide himself to Slughorn. Using a Luck potion he won earlier in the school year, Harry is able to bring Slughorn to be intoxicated with Hagrid and convinces the professor in his stupor to give him the true memory. This memory reveals that Riddle inquired about the creation of Horcruxes, devices that store a portion of the creator's soul to allow them to live indefinitely. Dumbledore reveals that Riddle's diary and his mother's ring were two of seven Horcruxes that Riddle had created, and that they must track these down and destroy them to make Voldemort mortal.

Meanwhile, Harry continues to be suspicious of Draco's actions, following him around the school but no success in determining what he seeks. Harry believes Draco to be behind two indirect attempts on Dumbledore's life, one through a cursed necklace that Katie Bell, under an Imperius Curse, was bringing to Dumbledore as a gift, and another through a bottle of poisoned wine that Slughorn, similarly cursed, planned to give to the professor. The latter is discovered accidently when Ron ingests the poison; though he recovers with medical treatment, he unconsciously mumbles Hermione's name in front of Lavender, sending her away crying. After this incident, Harry corners Draco in the toilets and after a short fight casts the Sectumsempra curse from the Half-Blood Prince's book, severely harming Draco. Snape arrives knowing that he let Draco get hurt and that he broke one of the promises and heals him. Ginny convinces Harry to hide the book in the Room of Requirement to prevent him from using it again; there, they discover, unknown to them, a Vanishing Cabinet, which Draco has been attempting to repair, but think nothing of it further. Ginny also reveals her love for Harry, and they kiss after she hides the book.

Dumbledore implores Harry to help him recover another Horcrux, the location of which he recently learned. The two apparate to a seaside cliff, and enter a cave where the Horcrux is located. On a small crystalline island, Dumbledore forces Harry to make him drink a mind-altering liquid in order to reveal the Horcrux. While Dumbledore recovers from the liquid, Harry recovers the Horcrux, a small pendant. Harry tries to help Dumbeldore recover, but they are attacked by numerous inferi. Dumbledore recovers in time to set them aflame, and the two return to the Astronomy Tower at Hogwarts.

Dumbledore, still weakened by the trial, instructs Harry to go to get Snape. However, before Harry can go, footsteps are heard, and Dumbledore tells Harry to hide on the lower floor. The footsteps belong to Draco, who prepares to kill Dumbledore, but cannot bring himself to do so. Meanwhile, with the Vanishing Cabinet fixed, Bellatrix and other Death Eaters are able to invade Hogwarts through a similar cabinet at Borgin and Burkes, and join Draco in the tower. Snape silently arrives on the lower floor, indicating to Harry to stay quiet, and then goes upstairs, joining the other Death Eaters. Snape then casts the killing spell Avada Kedavra on Dumbledore, throwing him over the side of the Tower and killing him. Snape, Draco, and the other Death Eaters depart the school, Bellatrix casting the Death Eaters' sign over the school, destroying the Great Hall and setting fire to Hagrid's hut in glee. Harry tries to stop them with the Sectumsempra spell, but Snape deflects it and stuns him. As he departs, he explains that he is the Half-Blood Prince and the creator of the spell.

Harry returns to the school to find the staff and students mourning over Dumbledore's death. Harry walks over to Dumbledore's body lying in front of them, grieving as Ginny comforts him. When he returns to the late headmaster's office one last time, McGonagall confronts him and asks him to open up to her, but he does not comply and leaves. A portrait of Dumbledore can be seen hanging on a wall behind them.

Harry reveals to Ron and Hermione that the Horcrux they got was a fake, containing a message from an "R.A.B." that stated he had already taken it, but is also seeking to end Voldemort's life. Harry tells his friends that he does not plan to return next year, instead seeking out R.A.B. and the other Horcruxes so that he may put an end to Voldemort; Ron and Hermione remind Harry that they are his friends and will help alongside him in his goal.
